Chinese herbal mixture: Weidinger W14 - Qi building up
Mixture according to Dr. med. Georg Weidinger from his book „Die Chinesische Hausapotheke“ (published by Goldmann Verlag), book page 490 (Order book online at Amazon).
Note on the product name:
„Qi build-up“ - the name says it all. No symptom is suppressed, no system is moved or warmed.
W14 simply rebuilds the basic energy that your body needs for everything else.
Si Jun Zi Tang literally means „Decoction of the Four Noble Lords“ - four herbs that work together like four gentlemen: calmly, steadily, without haste, but with a powerful effect.
This recipe is over 900 years old and forms the basis for dozens of further developed formulas in TCM. Anyone who understands Si Jun Zi Tang understands the foundation of Chinese herbal medicine.
WHAT MAKES W14 SPECIAL?
The rare thing: Only four herbs - and yet the most powerful Qi formula in TCM
Most recipes consist of seven to fifteen herbs. W14 only needs four. That's not a shortage - that's mastery. Each herb has a precise role:
Dang Shen (40%) - the emperor of the recipe: builds up Qi directly
Bai Zhu (30%) - the minister: strengthens the spleen and dries moisture
Fu Ling (20%) - the assistant: removes excess moisture and soothes
Zhi Gan Cao (10%) - the ambassador: harmonizes and connects everything
It's like a perfectly attuned string quartet - four voices, none superfluous, each indispensable.
TCM MEETS MODERN SCIENCE
Main active ingredients
Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsitis) - 40%
Main active ingredients: codonopsin, polysaccharides, lobetyolin, saponins, sterols
The emperor of the recipe - and with 40% by far the largest proportion. Dang Shen is the mild but profound brother of Ren Shen (ginseng): It builds Qi without generating heat. This makes it ideal for long-term use. Studies show: The polysaccharides strengthen the intestinal flora and improve nutrient absorption - the body gets more energy from food again. Lobetyolin has been shown to increase erythrocyte formation (red blood cells), which improves the oxygen supply to the entire body. Immunomodulating properties have been proven in several studies.
TCM effect: Tonifies spleen and lung qi, nourishes blood and juices, raises clear yang, strengthens the basic energy of the entire body.
Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) - 30%
Main active ingredients: atractylones, atractylenolides (I, II, III), polysaccharides, essential oils
The minister - he ensures that the spleen can work again. While Dang Shen builds up Qi, Bai Zhu dries the dampness that accumulates when the spleen is weak. Atractylenolide III has been shown in studies to strengthen the intestinal barrier - less permeability, better defense. The essential oils promote gastric motility and improve appetite. Studies also show a diuretic effect, which removes excess fluid without depleting it.
TCM effect: Strengthens the spleen, dries moisture, stabilizes the exterior (stops spontaneous sweating), secures the fetus.
Fu Ling (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos) - 20%
Main active ingredients: pachymaran, triterpenoids (pachymic acid), beta-glucans, ergosterol
A unique herb - actually a fungus that grows on the roots of the pine tree. Fu Ling is the silent worker of the formula: it draws moisture downwards and calms the mind at the same time. Pachymaran belongs to the beta-glucans and has been shown in studies to have a strong immunomodulating effect - particularly on T-cell activity. The triterpenoids have an anti-inflammatory and nephroprotective (kidney-protecting) effect. Studies also show an anxiolytic (anxiety-relieving) effect via GABA receptors - which explains why Fu Ling is also used for anxiety, palpitations and sleep disorders.
TCM effect: Drains moisture, strengthens the spleen, calms the heart and mind, harmonizes the center.
Zhi Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, roasted) - 10%
Main active ingredients: glycyrrhizin, liquiritin, flavonoids, coumarins
The messenger - it harmonizes, connects and strengthens. According to TCM: „Zhi Gan Cao brings the other herbs together like a mediator between friends.“ Roasting increases the toning, warming effect on the center and makes the licorice less moisturizing. Glycyrrhizin has an anti-inflammatory effect, supports adrenal function and improves the bioavailability of all the other herbs in the formula.
TCM effect: Tonifies spleen qi, harmonizes all herbs, warms the center, nourishes the heart, softens sharp or harsh effects.
Synergies:
Si Jun Zi Tang is the mother of all Qi-building formulas. Its architecture is an object lesson: Dang Shen (40%) supplies the energy. Bai Zhu (30%) clears up - dries the moisture that always arises with Qi deficiency. Fu Ling (20%) wicks moisture downwards so that it leaves the body. Zhi Gan Cao (10%) harmonizes the interaction. The principle: build up (Dang Shen), clean up (Bai Zhu), drain (Fu Ling), connect (Zhi Gan Cao). In this order, in this balance. That is why this formula has worked for over 900 years - because it contains nothing superfluous.
HOW DOES W14 WORK?
Not a turbo - but a solid foundation.
W14 is not an energy injection.
It builds up your Qi slowly, steadily and sustainably - like a gardener who fertilizes the soil before sowing.
You won't feel any „kick“.
But after 4-6 weeks you realize:
- You have more stamina in everyday life - the afternoon is easier for you
- Your voice becomes stronger
- You sweat less during light exertion
- Your appetite returns, your stool becomes firmer
- You get sick less often
- The feeling of inner emptiness gives way - you feel „filled“ again“
APPLICATION & DOSAGE:
Consumption recommendation
2x daily 4-6 tablets (morning and evening)
Duration of use
As a build-up cure: At least 8-12 weeks
As a constitutional mixture: 3-6 months or longer - W14 is gentle enough for long-term use
After illness or exhaustion: 6-12 weeks for regeneration
Best combined with:
- Warm water or jujube tea (enhances the Qi-strengthening effect)
- In the morning after breakfast
- In the evening before going to bed
Tip: Useful combinations with other TCM herbal mixtures
- W14 → then W08: The step-by-step plan for deep exhaustion. First 4-6 weeks of W14 alone to rebuild the Qi. Then add W08 to rekindle the yang fire. Without Qi there is no Yang - therefore first build up, then warm up.
- W14 + W07Two areas of application.
(1) For signs of heat - night sweats, inner restlessness - if W08 would be too warming.
(2) In case of Qi deficiency with simultaneous liver stagnation. In both cases: W14 builds up Qi without heat, W07 moves the liver. Recommendation: First 4 weeks of W14 alone, then W07 to this. - W14 + W09: If Qi deficiency leads to susceptibility to infection - you are constantly ill, you take every cold with you. W14 builds up the spleen Qi, W09 strengthens the Wei-Qi (immune system) on the surface.
- W14 + W35: For long-term constitution building. W14 strengthens Qi, W35 nourishes Yin and Essence. Together they cover both sides: Energy and substance.

💊 Taking TCM herbs correctly - why more tablets and more time?
Western medicines are isolated single molecules in high concentrations - one active ingredient, one target. Like an arrow: fast and precise. That's why a single tablet is often enough.
TCM herbal mixtures work differently. Each formula contains several plants with hundreds of compounds that work in synergy - like an orchestra, not a soloist. The individual dose per compound is lower, but the sum unfolds a broad, profound effect. This is why more tablets are needed per intake - and why the side effects are generally milder.
And why so long? Western painkillers suppress symptoms in an hour - but the cause remains. TCM herbs change the pattern that creates the discomfort. The difference is like between a painkiller and physiotherapy: the painkiller works immediately, but physiotherapy heals. And healing takes time.
General intake recommendation:
(unless otherwise stated on the respective product page or by your TCM therapist)
✓ Dosage: 2x daily 4-6 tablets (depending on the formula)
✓ Duration: 6-12 weeks so that the body can really change its pattern
✓ Intake: Preferably with warm water, 30 minutes before or after eating

Only the highest quality herbs from Chinese medicine have been selected for the formulations of these food supplements to ensure maximum health benefits. They contain only over-the-counter herbs and are used as a dietary supplement.

Hello Karin. Please give yourself and the herbs more time. These are not tablets that suppress symptoms; rather, their effectiveness develops slowly, but in return they often tackle the root cause of the problem. So please be patient. We recommend taking them for at least 2-3 months. Kind regards, Wolfgang

Simply recommended! After one week of taking Qi build-up, I already noticed improvement in several areas. For example, I had for decades complaints with plantar warts on the soles of my feet.had tried EVERYTHING, really EVERYTHING....nothing helped. After 4 weeks of qi build up all warts gone.
