Tired is not sleepy - Why you still can't fall asleep

Ask the Yellow Emperor

You're lying in bed. Dead tired. And your thoughts circle and circle. You turn over. You look at the clock. And the more you try to fall asleep, the more awake you become.

This is not a sleep problem. This is a transitional problem. The difference between „tired“ and „sleepy“ explains why millions of people lie awake exhausted every night. Three experts and a legendary guest from the 2nd century explain what your nervous system really needs to finally get a good night's sleep - and why sleeping pills do exactly the wrong thing.

Qí Bó | The Yellow Emperor Huangdi | Zhang Zhongjing | Dr. Weber

Qí Bó | The Yellow Emperor Huangdi | Zhang Zhongjing | Dr. Weber

The Yellow Emperor: „Qi Bo, I am observing something that worries me. May brings light and warmth - but many of my subjects describe the same condition to me: they are exhausted all day. They almost fall over in the evening. And then they lie in bed - and can NOT fall asleep. Their thoughts are racing. What is that?“

Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, you are describing one of the most common ailments of our time. And it is directly related to May. We are entering the season of the fire element. The heart takes over. And in TCM, the heart is much more than a pump - it is the residence of the Shen. Of the mind. Of consciousness.“

The Yellow Emperor: „The Shen - the inner spark.“

Qi Bo: „Exactly. During the day, the Shen radiates outwards: it thinks, plans, feels, decides. That is its task. But in the evening it has to return - deep into the heart, into the silence, into the blood. There it rests. That's where he regenerates. He took a little break. Imagine Shen like a bird flying home in the evening. It needs a safe branch to land on. But if it's still light inside - too much thinking, too much excitement, too much heat - then it keeps circling. It can't find a place to land. And sleep? It waits - but it doesn't come.“

Dr. Weber: „And here comes a realization that changes everything. Qi Bo's image of the circling bird describes exactly what we measure in sleep medicine. But the crucial point is different: Tired and sleepy are two completely different things.

The Yellow Emperor: „What do you mean?“

Dr. Weber: „Tired means: your body has no more energy. You are exhausted. Empty. But sleepy means something completely different: your nervous system has actively switched over. It has switched Sympathetic nervous system - the accelerator pedal - let go and Parasympathetic nervous system - the brake - is activated. Only then does the cortisol level fall. Only then does the pineal gland begin to release melatonin. And only then does sleep come.“

The Yellow Emperor: „So someone can be dead tired - and still not sleep?“

Dr. Weber: „Exactly that. It happens millions of times every night. The body lies flat. But the nervous system is still energized. The brakes don't work.“

Qi Bo: „That's what I see: The Shen is circling because it's still too restless inside. Not because the bird isn't tired, but because there is no safe place to land.“

The Yellow Emperor: „An important distinction. But why can't the bird find a branch? What is blocking this brake?“

Dr. Weber: "GABA - Gamma-aminobutyric acid. This is the most important calming neurotransmitter in the brain. GABA is literally the chemical brake. When GABA is active, the nerve cells become calmer. Thoughts slow down. The transition to sleep becomes possible. But - and here comes the catch - Cortisol inhibits GABA. If you are under constant stress during the day, your cortisol level is still high in the evening. And as long as cortisol is high, GABA cannot work. The brake is blocked.“

The Yellow Emperor: „And that's why sleeping pills don't work?“

Dr. Weber: „Exactly. They stun the gas pedal - but they don't fix the brakes.“

The Yellow Emperor: „Good, the diagnosis makes sense. But what to do? How do you repair this brake?“

Qi Bo was silent for a moment. Then he said something unexpected.

Qi Bo: „Majesty - before I answer, there is someone you should meet. Someone who answered this question a very long time ago. He lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty, around 1,800 years ago. Posterity calls him the Hippocrates of Chinese medicine. His name is Zhang Zhongjing.“

The emperor looked surprised. Dr. Weber sat up straight.

Zhang Zhongjing enters. A calm man, with alert eyes and hands that told of decades of clinical work. He bows curtly.

Zhang Zhongjing: „Your Majesty. Qi Bo honors me. I am a simple doctor. But I've seen a certain kind of patient all my life - and that kind obviously still exists.“

The Yellow Emperor: „What kind?“

Zhang Zhongjing: „The person who is so exhausted from overwork that they can no longer sleep. The heart is agitated. The liver blood is not enough to sustain the spirit. He lies there, wide awake, although the body has long since given up. He tosses and turns, the heart pounds, the sweat comes - and sleep flees.“

The Yellow Emperor: „That describes exactly what we are talking about.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „I have developed a recipe for this sample. Five herbs. No more. They nourish the liver-blood, cool the heat that disturbs the spirit, and restore the shen to its nest. I have them Suan Zao Ren Tang after its main herb, the spiny jujube seed. This herb was already famous before my time - it is listed in the Shennong Bencao Jing, the oldest pharmacopoeia we know of. Classified as an upper-ranking herb 2,500 years ago: good for the mind, good for the heart, safe for a long time.“

Dr. Weber: „Master Zhang - your recipe has been studied pharmacologically in recent years. The active ingredients - especially jujuboside A - influence GABA and serotonin receptors. In other words, the two systems that we have just identified as the key to sleep.“

Zhang Zhongjing smiled for the first time. „I didn't know those words. But I knew my patients. And I saw what works. The formula doesn't anaesthetize - it gives the body back what it lacks. That's a difference that is often overlooked.“

The Yellow Emperor: „It fixes the brakes - instead of numbing the accelerator pedal.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „You could say that, Your Majesty.“

The Yellow Emperor: „And what can my subjects do tonight? Not everyone has access to your recipe.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „The formula is for those who need it. But the most important medicine is not an herb - it is the Transition. In my time, the sun went down and the world became silent. No candlelight was enough to capture the day. Darkness came - and with it, peace. The body didn't need a ritual because life itself was one.“

Qi Bo: „And that's exactly what's missing today. The sun is setting - but the screens are still shining. That's why we have to consciously build the transition. 90 minutes before sleep the night begins. Not in bed - in the head.“

Dr. Weber: „This is the minimum time the nervous system needs to switch from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system. Without this transition time, you're trying to slow down a car in fifth gear.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „And these 90 minutes include a hot drink. That's no small thing. The warmth signals to the body that the day is over. In ancient China, this wasn't a luxury - it was part of everyday life.“

Qi Bo: „TCM has its own evening drink: Jujuben and Longan, infused in hot water. Add two to three dried jujubes - the small Chinese red dates - and a tablespoon of dried longan pulp. Leave to infuse for ten minutes. Jujubes nourish the heart blood. Longan anchors the Shen.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „In my recipe, I use the spiked jujube seeds - the Suan Zao Ren. But the sweet red jujubes as an evening drink nourish the blood in a gentle way. It's just right for everyday life.“

Dr. Weber: „And for all those for whom this sounds too unfamiliar - a Golden milk without ginger also works: warm almond milk or coconut milk, half a teaspoon of turmeric, a pinch of cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg, a pinch of black pepper. No ginger - it's too activating in the evening. Or a cup of Passion flower tea - It works on the GABA receptor, gently and without the risk of addiction.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „Which drink is less important than most people think. What counts is: The same thing every evening. At the same time. In the same place. The body does not learn once. It learns through repetition.“

Qi Bo: „Exactly that. The Shen doesn't need medicine - it needs reliability. If the light is dimmed at the same time every evening and the same cup is steaming - then the Shen knows: Here is my branch. This is where I can land.“

Dr. Weber: „Sleep research confirms this. Regular evening rituals activate the parasympathetic nervous system - and give GABA the space to work. The brain learns: after this signal comes sleep.“

The Yellow Emperor: „Then let's make a clear plan out of it - tomorrow, day and evening.“

🌙 The 3-way method: bringing the Shen to rest

🌅 TOMORROW PROTOCOL (Preparing the brake)

  • TCM: Bitter cools the heart's fire. Starting with it in the morning lays the foundation for the night.
  • Science: Bitter substances support digestion - and a healthy digestive tract absorbs tryptophan better, the precursor of serotonin and melatonin.
  • Practical: A cup of dandelion root or artichoke tea. And 5 minutes of silence - before the cell phone is switched on.

🌞 TAGS STRATEGY (reduce cortisol naturally)

  • TCM: The heart needs genuine joy - not constant stimulation. Connection, laughter, a moment of beauty nourish the fire element without overheating it.
  • Science: Real breaks without screens and social contact lower cortisol levels during the day - the most important prerequisite for GABA to work in the evening.
  • Practical: 10 minutes a day completely without a device - take a walk, have a real conversation, listen to music. Every day. Consistently.

🌙 EVENING RITUAL (bring Shen home - from 90 minutes before sleep)

  • TCM: The heart fire must be allowed to die down. Warmth, silence and regularity in the evening are no trifle - they are medicine.
  • Science: Warm, dimmed light starts the melatonin signal. Regular rituals have been proven to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Practical:
    1. from 90 minutes before going to sleep: dim the lights, turn off the screens or use night mode consistently.
    2. TCM evening drink: Infuse 2-3 jujubes + 1 tbsp dried longan pulp in hot water for 10 minutes. Nourishes the heart-blood and calms the Shen.
    3. Or the familiar alternative: Golden milk (evening version) - warm almond milk or coconut milk + ½ tsp turmeric + pinch of cinnamon + pinch of nutmeg + pinch of black pepper. No ginger.
    4. Or: One cup Passion flower tea - acts on the GABA receptor, gently and without risk of addiction.
    5. Acupressure point He 07 (Shenmen): Inside the wrist, side of the little finger, in the hollow between the bone and tendon. 90 seconds per side, gently circling. The „gate of the mind“ - calms the Shen directly. All 4 sleep points in the guide.

The insider tip: beauty is medicine

Qi Bo: „One last secret, Your Majesty - one that many overlook. The heart in the fire element not only governs sleep and emotions. It also governs the The joy of beauty. A silent sunset. A candle. A few sour cherries in the evening. That sounds like pleasure - but it's more. The heart needs beauty in the evening, not stimulation.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „May I add something? The patients who recovered the fastest under my treatment were never the most disciplined. They were the ones who found peace. In a cup of tea. In an evening walk. In silence after a long day. The formula alone does not heal - it opens the door. You have to go through it yourself.“

Dr. Weber: „And that's no coincidence. Candlelight is around 1800 Kelvin - the most melatonin-friendly light source we know of. The sour cherries contain small amounts of natural melatonin - not a sleep aid, but a complementary boost. What Qi Bo describes as heart nourishment, what Master Zhang observes as peace and I know as neurobiology - at this moment it is literally the same recommendation.“

The Yellow Emperor: „A candle. A few cherries. Peace with the day. The Shen finds his way home.“

Understanding your own sleep type

The Yellow Emperor: „Qi Bo, Dr. Weber, Master Zhang - for all those who want to delve deeper: Is there a plan that summarizes everything?“

Dr. Weber: „There is such a thing. In the Sleep guide you'll find everything we've only touched on today - the organ clock as a diagnostic tool, the four sleep types in TCM, acupressure points for the Shen, and a complete step-by-step evening protocol.“

Qi Bo: „Because if you regularly wake up between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., you need a different strategy than someone who can't fall asleep at all. The organ clock tells you which system needs help - and chronobiology confirms astonishing parallels.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „And if you want to get to know my recipe - the guide contains everything: the five herbs, why I chose them and who they are for.“

The Yellow Emperor: „And if someone wants to support the work on a deeper level - with herbs?“

Qi Bo: „Two formulas that have proven themselves in everyday life. The first calms the Shen directly - with the main herb from Master Zhang's formula. The second supports the brake via the nervous system - with valerian and L-theanine.“

🌿 Anchoring the Shen - two paths, one goal

TCM Herbal Blend - The Sleeping Bear by Anshen Herbs

Qí Bó & Zhang Zhongjing recommend:

Strategy 1 - Anchor the Shen, nourish the heart-blood:
You fall asleep but wake up at night. Palpitations, forgetfulness, inner restlessness. The heart-blood lacks the substance to hold the spirit - the Shen has no nest.

1st product of the month:
The sleeping bear

Qi Bo: „This recipe carries the main herb from Master Zhang's formula: Suan Zao Ren - the sour jujube seed. The most important sleeping herb in TCM for 2,500 years. Plus He Huan Pi, which loosens emotional knots, and Long Gu and Mu Li, which anchor a circling mind. A classic Shen anchor formula.“

What the sleeping bear does for you:

  • Anchors the Shen - with Suan Zao Ren, the main herb of the best-known TCM sleep formula
  • Nourishes the heart and blood - so that the spirit finds a soft nest in the evening
  • Loosens emotional knots - He Huan Pi (silk acacia bark) soothes without numbing

Who is it ideal for?
✓ If you wake up at night and can't go back to sleep

✓ Anyone who is familiar with palpitations, forgetfulness or inner restlessness

✓ If you want to calm the Shen in a natural way - without the risk of addiction

⏱ Take for 4-8 weeks, ideally in combination with the 90-minute evening ritual.

Strategy 2 - Support the brake directly: Your thoughts go round in circles. You ruminate without a solution. Your head feels like it's in absorbent cotton. The spleen is weakened - and the circular thinking keeps the Shen awake.

2nd product of the month:
Snooze deep

Dr. Weber: „What convinces me about this recipe: Valerian calms the spinning mind via the nervous system. L-theanine from the tea plant promotes GABA activity in the brain - exactly the brake we discussed today. Plus TCM herbs such as Jiao Gu Lan and Da Zao. The entry point for anyone who wants to combine something familiar with TCM depth.“

What Schlummertief does for you:

  • Calms the carousel of thoughts - Valerian (30%) acts directly on the nervous system
  • Supports the GABA brake - L-theanine (17%) promotes GABA activity in the brain
  • Strengthens the center - TCM herbs ground the mind and dissolve the moisture that clouds the mind

Who is it ideal for?
✓ Those who can't switch off in the evening - the carousel of thoughts keeps spinning

✓ Those who are tired during the day, especially after eating, and lie awake at night

✓ For those looking for a gentle introduction - with proven Western plants and TCM depth

Wisdom to take away

The Yellow Emperor: „Then I'll summarize. If you lie awake at night, you don't have a sleep problem - but a transition problem?“

Qi Bo: „That's right, Your Majesty. Sleep does not come when you call it. It comes when the Shen feels safe. 90 minutes of silence. A warm ritual. And permission to let the day go.“

Dr. Weber: „Tired is not sleepy. This one difference explains why millions of people lie in bed exhausted and can't fall asleep. Fix the brake - not the gas pedal.“

Zhang Zhongjing: „And if the brake is damaged more deeply than a ritual can repair - there has been a formula for this for 1,800 years. You just have to know it.“

The Yellow Emperor: „If you want to better understand your personal sleep type - whether heart-blood, heart-yin, spleen or liver-qi - I recommend the free TCM analysis on my-tcm.com.“

Preview June

The Yellow Emperor: „Qi Bo, you said that the heart not only governs sleep - it also governs joy. That sounds like a topic for next month.“

Qi Bo: „And what a one, Your Majesty. Because the greatest threat to the heart in summer is not the heat - it's false joy. Entertainment that stimulates instead of nourishing. Stimulation that overheats the Shen instead of strengthening it.“

Dr. Weber: „Dopamine versus serotonin - the battle that takes place in every smartphone. It's going to be exciting.“

The Yellow Emperor: „Then in June we'll devote ourselves to the heart itself. Until then - may your Shen find its branch every evening.“

About our „3 Wise Men“ story

Who are the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo?

The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi, 黄帝) is said to have lived around 2600 BC and is regarded as the mythical founder of Chinese culture and medicine. Qi Bo was his most important advisor and personal physician. Their discussions about health, illness and human nature were recorded in the most important fundamental work of TCM.

The book: Huangdi Neijing

The „Huangdi Neijing“ (黄帝内经), also known as „The Yellow Emperor - The Fundamental Work of Traditional Chinese Medicine“, was probably written between 200 BC and 200 AD. It is the oldest surviving work of Chinese medicine and consists of dialogues between the Yellow Emperor and his advisors - mainly Qi Bo.

This work is to TCM what the Bible is to Christianity: the absolute foundation. All the important concepts - yin and yang, the 5 elements, qi, meridians and acupuncture points - are systematically described here for the first time.

Our guest: Zhang Zhongjing

Zhang Zhongjing (張仲景, ca. 150-219 AD) is considered the most important clinician in the history of Chinese medicine - posterity calls him the „Hippocrates of Chinese medicine“. His work Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Chamber) is one of the two most important books in all of TCM. Its sleep formula Suan Zao Ren Tang has been used for around 1,800 years and is still the most widely used sleep formula in clinical TCM today.

Our modern approach: The 3 wise men

In our series „The 3 Sages“, we bring together the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo with the fictional modern doctor and microbiologist Dr. Weber. In this special edition, we welcome a guest for the first time - the legendary doctor Zhang Zhongjing.

Important note: All the characters and their conversations are purely fictitious and invented by us.

We use this narrative form, similar to the dialog form in the book Huangdi Neijing, to convey the often complex relationships of TCM in an understandable and entertaining way. When the 4000-year-old emperor is confronted with modern science, enlightening „aha moments“ arise which show that ancient wisdom and new research often speak the same language: Ancient wisdom and new research often speak the same language - just in different words.

This makes TCM lively, understandable and practically applicable for your everyday life.

The dialogs are creative interpretations - not historical documents. For medical questions, please consult a qualified TCM therapist or doctor.
