Sensitive to the weather? The problem is not the weather

What's really behind your spring headache

It was sunny a moment ago. Now it's raining. Tomorrow 20 degrees again. Frost the day after tomorrow. April does what it wants. And your head goes along with it.
This pressure behind the forehead. The throbbing at the temples. The feeling as if someone is pulling a band around your head.

You reach for the tablet. Again. It helps. Briefly. Then comes the next change in the weather. And the next headache. You think: „I'm just sensitive to the weather.“ You think: „There's nothing you can do.“

But what if that's not true? What if your headache is not caused by the weather - but by how your body reacts to it?

You can't change the wind. But you can learn to close your window.

You can't change the wind.
But you can learn to close your window.

🌬️ The liver and your head - an explosive connection

In TCM, headaches are never „just headaches“. They are a sign that something is out of balance.

And spring is the most common culprit: The liver.

The liver is the organ of spring (wood element). Its energy wants to grow upwards and outwards - like a tree that grows.

Normally that's a good thing: new beginnings, a thirst for action, creativity.

But if the liver energy too strong shoots upwards, that's what happens:

  • Yang rises uncontrollably
  • It collects in the head
  • Pressure, throbbing, pain

TCM calls this: Rising liver yang.

The typical signs:

  • Headache at the temples or behind the eyes
  • Throbbing, pulsating
  • Worse with stress, anger, frustration
  • Often accompanied by irritability
  • Red face, red eyes
  • Dizziness, drowsiness

Why in spring?

  • The liver is more active anyway
  • The weather is constantly changing (wind!)
  • The body must constantly adapt
  • If the liver is already weakened or stagnant, it tips over more easily

🌀 Wind - The invisible trigger

TCM recognizes a factor that Western medicine underestimates: Wind.

In TCM, wind is not just air that moves.

Wind is a pathogenic force that:

  • Suddenly comes and goes
  • Wandering symptoms caused by
  • Attacks the head in particular (highest point of the body)
  • Activates the liver

Outer wind: Hairdryer, weather change, air conditioning, draught

Inner wind: Caused by liver imbalance - stress, anger, frustration

When outer wind meets inner wind: headache.

Therefore: April weather + stress = peak headache season.

⚠️ The test: What type of headache are you?

Not all headaches are the same. The localization reveals a lot:

Temples / lateral head:

  • Classic liver yang / gallbladder meridian
  • Often throbbing, pulsating
  • Worse with stress and anger

Back of the head / neck:

  • Outer wind / bladder meridian
  • Often after draughts, cold, changes in weather
  • Stiff neck in addition

Forehead / behind the eyes:

  • Stomach meridian / center weakness
  • Often after heavy meals, with nausea
  • Dull, oppressive

Whole head / like a ribbon:

  • Moisture / spleen weakness
  • Heavy, dull, dazed
  • Worse in damp weather

crown / top:

  • Liver-Yang extreme / Liver-Fire
  • Intense, penetrating
  • With dizziness, red face

Where is your pain? This will show you where you need to start.

🧠 The western bridge: What happens when you have a headache

Science confirms the connections:

Weather sensitivity:
Studies show: Changes in air pressure influence blood flow in the brain. In some people, the blood vessels react more strongly - they dilate or constrict more quickly. This causes pain.

Stress and tension:
Chronic stress leads to permanent muscle tension - especially in the neck and shoulders. This tension radiates into the head. TCM says the same thing: liver qi stagnation = tension = pain.

Histamine:
Histamine levels (pollen) increase in spring. Histamine can dilate blood vessels and trigger headaches - especially in people with limited histamine breakdown (liver!).

Sleep and hormones:
The time change and longer days upset the melatonin rhythm. Poor sleep = more headaches.

Two worlds. One realization: Headaches are not destiny. They have causes - and you can influence them.

🌿 The 5 pillars against spring headaches

1. calming the liver yang - cooling instead of heating

If the energy shoots up, it has to go down.

Install:

  • Peppermint tea (cools, lowers Yang)
  • Chrysanthemum tea (classic for headaches, cools the liver)
  • Green vegetables: spinach, chard, cucumber, celery
  • Lemon, apple cider vinegar (acidic leads to the liver)

Avoid:

  • Alcohol (massively heats up the liver)
  • Coffee in large quantities
  • Spicy food
  • Greasy, fried, deep-fried
  • Chocolate, cheese (histamine!)

📣 Insider tip: For acute headaches: peppermint oil on the temples. Cools immediately and relaxes the blood vessels.

This week: Daily peppermint or chrysanthemum tea. No alcohol.

2. protect your neck - block out the wind

The neck is the „gateway to the head“. When wind enters, it goes straight up.

Practical:

  • Wear a scarf - even in April (especially in windy conditions)
  • Do not expose wet head / wet hair to the wind
  • Do not point the air conditioning directly at the neck
  • After sport: cover your neck

📣 Insider tip: Point Gb 20 (neck) cover with warm cloth in the morning -
2 minutes. Closes the „wind gate“.

As of today: Always scarf in windy conditions. Do not discuss.

3. release tension - shoulders down

Most headache patients have something in common:
Raised shoulders.

Practical - The 3×3 rule:

  • 3 times a day (morning, noon, evening)
  • 3 deep breaths
  • With each exhalation: consciously drop your shoulders

In addition:

  • Neck stretches (ear to shoulder, 30 sec per side)
  • Shoulder circles (10x forwards, 10x backwards)
  • Loosen your jaw (often unconsciously tense!)

📣 Insider tip: Set yourself an alarm - „shoulder check“ 3 times a day. After a week, it will become a habit.

As of today: The 3×3 rule. Every day.

4. regulate stress - the liver loves flow

Stress stagnates the liver. Stagnation rises. Rise = headache.

Practical:

  • Exercise that relaxes: Walking, Qi Gong, yoga, swimming
  • NOT: High-intensity training for acute headaches
  • Take breaks - before your head hurts
  • Letting out anger and frustration - not suppressing it

The 5-minute rescue:

  • Close your eyes
  • 10 deep breaths (exhale twice as long)
  • Each time you exhale: imagine the energy flowing downwards - into your feet

At the first signs: 5-minute rescue. Don't wait until it gets bad.

5. regularity - the body loves rhythm

Irregularity stresses the liver. Rhythm calms it.

Practical:

  • Regular sleeping times (also at the weekend)
  • Regular meals (do not skip meals)
  • Do not eat too late (before 7 pm)
  • Screen breaks every 45-60 minutes

📣 Insider tip: The liver regenerates between 1am and 3am. Anyone who is still awake at that time robs it of its rest - and pays for it the next day with a headache.

As of today: In bed before 11 pm. Your liver will thank you.

💫 The deeper message

April is raging. Your head doesn't have to join in.

Your headache is not the weather. Your headache is how your body reacts to the weather.

And you can change this reaction.

Not overnight. But step by step.

A liver that is in flow. A neck that is protected. Shoulders that let go. A rhythm that carries.

Then April can do whatever it wants. Your head stays clear.

„You can't change the wind. But you can learn to close your window.“
