The most important LOVE does not start with others. It starts with YOU.
❤️ The heart in TCM - The emperor on the throne
In TCM, the heart (Xīn) is not just a pump. It is the emperor of your inner kingdom.
The heart rules:
- The Shen (mind, consciousness, soul)
- The blood vessels and circulation
- The tongue and speaking
- The ability to feel joy
- The connection to yourself and to others
When the heart is in balance:
- You feel present, clear, alive
- You can feel joy - real, deep joy
- You sleep well and dream peacefully
- You can open up - for yourself and for others
- You feel connected - even when you are alone
If the heart is weakened or restless:
- Inner restlessness, anxiety, panic attacks
- Sleep disorders, vivid or disturbing dreams
- The feeling of standing next to you
- Difficulties in feeling joy
- The feeling of being disconnected - from yourself and from the world
- Palpitations without a physical cause
The emperor on the throne needs rest, food and - yes - Love.
🔥 Shen - The spirit that dwells in the heart
TCM has a concept that hardly exists in the West: Shen.
Shen is difficult to translate. It is your spirit. Your consciousness. The spark in your eyes. That which makes you you makes.
A person with a strong Shen:
- Has sparkling eyes
- Is mentally clear and present
- Radiates something that cannot be named
- Feels at home in itself
A person with disturbed Shen:
- Seems absent, dull, „not quite there“
- Has dull or restless eyes
- Has difficulty concentrating
- Feels separated from himself
Shen lives in the heart. And it is nourished by: Peace, joy, good blood - and Self-love.
Yes, self-love is not wellness in TCM. It is Food for the mind.
🧠 The western bridge: What self-love does to the body
Science confirms what the old masters knew:
Self-compassion and the nervous system: Studies show: People who treat themselves with kindness have higher heart rate variability, less cortisol and a more active parasympathetic nervous system. Self-love is measurably calming.
Oxytocin: The „bonding hormone“ is not only released by the touch of others - but also through self-touch, warm thoughts and inner kindness.
The inner voice: Negative self-talk activates the stress axis in the same way as external threats. Your body cannot tell whether the criticism is coming from outside or inside.
Heart health: Chronic emotional stress increases the risk of heart disease. Self-compassion measurably reduces this risk.
Two worlds. One realization: How you talk to yourself affects your heart - literally.
⚠️ The signs of a starving heart
Maybe you recognize yourself here:
- You are constantly giving - and still feel empty
- You care about everyone - but not yourself
- You don't know what you actually need
- You feel guilty when you do something for yourself
- You wait for love from outside - and it never comes enough
- You talk to yourself the way you would never talk to a friend
- You feel unworthy - for love, success, happiness
That's not a character flaw. It's a hungry heart. And it's waiting for you to finally feed it.
🌹 The 5 pillars of self-love
1. hand on heart - daily
The simplest and most powerful exercise. Self-touch activates oxytocin and signals your nervous system: Safety. Security. Love.
Practical:
- Sit down or lie down
- Place your right hand on your heart (center of your chest)
- Place your left hand over it or on your stomach
- Close your eyes
- Breathe slowly: inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds
- Feel the warmth of your hand
- Say inwardly: „I am there. I see myself. I am enough.“
- Hold for 2-3 minutes
📣 Insider tip: Do this first thing every morning - even before your cell phone. This will set the tone for the day.
2. paraphrasing the inner voice
Pay attention to the way you talk to yourself. Would you talk like this to a good friend?
The exercise:
- If you notice a critical thought („I'm so stupid“, „I'll never make it“, „I'm not lovable“)...
- Stop. Breathe.
- Ask yourself: „What would I say to a good friend who feels this?“
- Tell yourself exactly that. Out loud, if possible.
Example: Critical: „I'm such a loser.“ Transcribed: „You're having a hard time right now. That's human. You're doing the best you can.“
The voice in your head shapes your heart. Choose it wisely.
3. joy without reason - nourishing the heart
In TCM, joy is the emotion of the heart. But not the excited, manic joy - but the quiet, deep joy of simply being.
Practical:
- Do ONE thing every day just for yourself - without a goal, without productivity
- It can be: Listening to a song. Standing in the sunlight. Really tasting a cup of tea.
- Allow yourself joy - without earning it
The question: „What would give me pleasure now - if no one ever found out?“
Do this.
4. nourish the heart - through food
The heart needs blood. Good, rich blood. A lack of blood leads to Shen disorders.
Red foods for the heart:
- Beet
- Pomegranate
- Goji berries
- Red dates (jujube)
- THE heart tonic - cherries, raspberries
Blood-building foods:
- Dark leafy vegetables (cooked)
- Bone broth
- Eggs
- Small amounts of red meat (if you eat it)
Calming foods for the Shen:
- Oats (soothes the heart)
- Wheat (in moderation)
- Longan fruits
Rose water or rose blossom tea
📣 Insider tip: Red date tea - steep 3-5 red dates (jujube) in hot water for 10 minutes. Sweet, nourishing, heart-strengthening. Perfect in the afternoon.
5. boundaries as self-love
Self-love is not just what you give yourself. It is also what you no longer allow yourself to do.
Practical:
- Learn to say „no“ - without explanation
- Distance yourself from people who make you small
- Stop apologizing for your needs
- Allow yourself to accept help
Every boundary you set is a love letter to yourself.

💫 The deeper message
Valentine's Day celebrates love.
But the most important love is forgotten.
The love that doesn't depend on roses.
The love that doesn't wait for a partner.
The love you can give yourself - every day, at any time.
Self-love is not selfishness. It is the Source, from which all other love flows.
You can't give what you don't have.
You can't love if your own heart is starving.
So ask yourself today: When was the last time I did something just for myself? When was the last time I spoke to myself in a friendly way? When was the last time I nourished my own heart?
Valentine's Day can be a day of outward love.
But perhaps it is also an invitation to look inwards.
To where a heart is waiting.
Your heart. That has been waiting so long to be loved by you.
„The most important relationship in your life is the relationship with yourself. Because no matter what happens - you are always there.“
