Qí Bó | The Yellow Emperor Huangdi | Dr. Weber
The Yellow Emperor: „Qi Bo, many of my subjects in the 21st century believe they have to ‚detox‘ their bodies regularly. They fast, they only drink juices, they call it ‚detox‘. My question is: does the human body need to be cleansed from the outside?“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, the body is not a vessel that needs to be emptied. It is a living system - and this system cleanses itself. Every day. Every hour. But - and this is crucial - it can only do this if the three systems that are responsible for it are working. The question is not: How do I get it to detoxify? The question is: What is preventing it from doing so?“
Dr. Weber: „And this is precisely where the misunderstanding lies. The word ‚detox‘ sounds medical, but it has no defined content. There is medical detoxification - for heavy metal poisoning or drug overdoses. But that is intensive care medicine. What most people do as a ‚detox‘ has nothing to do with this. The basic idea is not wrong - to support the body in its work. It's just the approach that's wrong.“
The Yellow Emperor: „What do you mean?“
What really happens in your liver
Dr. Weber: „Let's take juice cures as an example. The idea sounds sensible: supplying vitamins, relieving the body. But if you understand how the liver really works, you can see the problem. Your liver detoxifies in three phases. Phase I breaks down harmful substances - drugs, alcohol, environmental toxins, excess hormones. But this produces highly reactive intermediates: free radicals that are more aggressive than the original substances.“
The Yellow Emperor: „More aggressive than what it is supposed to decompose?“
Dr. Weber: „Exactly. Phase II has to neutralize these intermediates immediately. And for this it needs very specific building blocks: Amino acids from protein, B vitamins, glutathione, sulphur compounds from cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage. And in phase III, the neutralized substances are excreted via the bile and kidneys - but only if phase II has done its job.“
The Yellow Emperor: „And a juice cure provides...?“
Dr. Weber: „Practically nothing. No protein, hardly any B vitamins, no sulphur. Phase I is running - the harmful substances are being broken down. But phase II cannot follow suit. The intermediate products remain in the system. And phase III has nothing to remove. This means that you exhaust the very system you wanted to support.“
The Yellow Emperor: „That sounds like the opposite of what you want to achieve.“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, it's like a stove: if you light the fire but don't add fuel, it burns itself out. The intention is good. But without the right building blocks, it does more harm than good.“
The secret enemy: fructose
Dr. Weber: „And there's another problem that goes much deeper than juice cures - one that almost no one has on their radar. Fructose.“
The Yellow Emperor: „Fructose? Isn't that considered healthy?“
Dr. Weber: „That's the mistake. Glucose is directly utilized everywhere in the body. Fructose, on the other hand, has to be completely processed in the liver. And there it is converted into fat - directly, without any detours. The formation of new fat in the liver through fructose is up to 15 times higher than through glucose.“
The Yellow Emperor: „But fruit contains fructose, doesn't it?“
Dr. Weber: „Whole fruit is not a problem - the fiber slows down absorption. The problem is fruit juices, smoothies, soft drinks and especially ready-made products with fructose-glucose syrup. A glass of orange juice contains the fructose of five oranges, without a single fiber. That floods the liver. And that every day, for years. The result is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease - one in three people now have one, often without knowing it. The liver suffers in silence.“
Qi Bo: „That worries me, Your Majesty. Your subjects think they are eating healthily - juice for breakfast, smoothie in the afternoon. And in doing so, they are putting a strain on the very organ they are trying to protect.“
Dr. Weber: „The good news is that the liver recovers surprisingly quickly. Studies show that liver values improve significantly after just 9 days without added sugar.“
The spleen - the powerhouse of transformation
The Yellow Emperor: „Qi Bo, so if the ‚detox‘ path is the wrong one - how does TCM understand detoxification?“
Qi Bo: „Majesty, in TCM there is no such thing as ‚detox‘. We know a different principle: transformation. Everything you eat, drink and experience must be transformed by your body. Food becomes qi and blood. Liquid becomes that which moisturizes and nourishes. If this transformation is successful, clear energy, clean blood and a light body feeling are created.“
The Yellow Emperor: „And if it doesn't succeed?“
Qi Bo: „Then what your subjects feel as heaviness and sluggishness arises: dampness - a feeling of heaviness, fog in the head, water retention. Phlegm - everything that thickens and accumulates. Heat - inflammation, restlessness, skin problems. Stagnation - pressure, tension, irritability. These are not toxins from the outside, Majesty. These are products of an incomplete transformation.“
Dr. Weber: „And this is where I see the strongest parallel with modern research. What TCM calls ‚dampness‘ and ‚phlegm‘, we describe as metabolites - metabolic products that remain in the system if metabolism is incomplete. Lactate, ammonia, excess lipids. And the solution is the same in both systems: don't squeeze more out, but improve the processing. And nature has built in an ingenious mechanism for this.“
The Yellow Emperor: „Which one?“
Dr. Weber: „In 2016, the Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi received the Nobel Prize for his research into autophagy. This is your body's cellular waste disposal system: your cells recognize old, damaged components, break them down and use them as raw materials. A recycling plant in every single cell.“
The Yellow Emperor: „And what does it take for this autophagy to take place?“
Dr. Weber: „Not day-long juice cures, but regular breaks between meals. Four to five hours without snacking. Don't eat for twelve hours overnight. That's enough. For most people, that's all they need.“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, that's exactly what we've been teaching for thousands of years. Three meals a day. Real breaks in between. Don't eat all the time - not even ‚healthy snacks‘. The spleen needs rest between meals to fully transform.“
The Yellow Emperor: „Nobel Prize for something we've known for 4,000 years. Very well. But I sense that we haven't reached the end yet. What happens at night when man finally rests?“
The body cleanses itself - if you let it
Dr. Weber: „More than most people realize. Sleep is the most powerful cleanser your body knows. In 2012, the glymphatic system was discovered - a detoxification system in the brain that only becomes active during deep sleep. During sleep, the intercellular spaces in the brain expand by up to 60 percent. This opens up channels through which cerebrospinal fluid flows and removes waste products - including beta-amyloid, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease.“
The Yellow Emperor: „So the brain cleans itself at night?“
Dr. Weber: „Exactly. And only at night. And only in deep sleep. No tea, no powder, no cure can replace this. Neither can sleeping pills - a recent study shows that they demonstrably disrupt the process. You fall asleep, but your brain doesn't cleanse itself.“
Qi Bo: „Majesty, TCM has always said that between 1 and 3 a.m. is liver time. The liver regenerates - but only when you are asleep. If you're still awake at 1 a.m., the night shift is canceled. What Dr. Weber describes about the brain, we see for the whole body: the night is the time of renewal. No herb can replace what sleep does.“
The liver - a conductor, not a garbage can
The Yellow Emperor: „So sleep is the most powerful cleansing. But during the day - what can my subjects do for their liver? You hear about ‚detoxing the liver‘ everywhere.“
Qi Bo: „In TCM, the liver is not a cleaner, Your Majesty. It is a conductor. Its job is to ensure that everything flows - qi, blood, emotions. When the liver energy flows freely, the whole body works harmoniously. If it stagnates, everything builds up: pressure under the ribs, irritability, headaches, sluggish digestion. And here comes something that will surprise people in the 21st century: The biggest strain on the liver isn't bad food. It's suppressed emotions.“
Dr. Weber: „I can contribute something concrete. Chronic stress permanently increases the cortisol level. Cortisol promotes hepatic gluconeogenesis - the liver constantly produces sugar that nobody needs. At the same time, cortisol inhibits phase II detoxification. A stressed liver is therefore measurably a worse liver. And no milk thistle tea in the world will compensate for this if the source of stress remains.“
The Yellow Emperor: „So what really helps the liver?“
Dr. Weber: „Three things that don't cost money: Exercise - moderate physical activity measurably improves liver blood flow. Sleep - we've already heard what happens at night. And: emotional expression. What you don't express congests the liver.“
Qi Bo: „Majesty, do you hear? Modern science confirms what the old masters already knew: the liver does not suffer from eating alone. It suffers from silence, from sitting still, from not sleeping. A river that flows cleanses itself. A river that is blocked rots.“
The kidney - the forgotten root
The Yellow Emperor: „The spleen transforms, the liver directs - but you spoke of three systems, Qi Bo. What about the third?“
Qi Bo: „The kidney, Your Majesty. And it is perhaps the most important system of all - because it provides the basic energy for everything else. The spleen needs power to transform. The liver needs power to move. Where does this power come from? From the kidney. It is the root. It stores what we call essence - your deepest reserve.“
The Yellow Emperor: „And what depletes this reserve?“
Qi Bo: „Exactly what your subjects do every day: Sleep too little. Work too much. Constantly under pressure. Drinking too much coffee to keep going. Cold drinks to quench the inner fire. And radical fasting - that draws on reserves that aren't even there. Your kidneys are not a system that you activate, Your Majesty. It's a system that you protect.“
Dr. Weber: „We talked about cortisol and the liver earlier. But the kidneys are hit even harder. Cortisol is formed from precursors that the body also needs for sex hormones, thyroid function and immune regulation. If too much cortisol is permanently produced, these building blocks are lacking elsewhere. What TCM calls ‚loss of essence‘, endocrinology describes as neuroendocrine exhaustion. Deep fatigue that does not improve with sleep. Cold feet. Back pain. Feelings of anxiety.“
The Yellow Emperor: „And what strengthens the kidneys?“
Qi Bo: „Rest, your majesty. Sleep. Warmth - especially on the feet and lower back. Warm water instead of cold drinks. And food that nourishes without demanding: Walnuts, black sesame seeds, bone broth. The kidneys regenerate in silence - not in the next program.“
The Yellow Emperor: „Three systems. Three tasks. The spleen transforms, the liver directs, the kidney preserves. But how do you bring this into everyday life? What can you do in the morning, during the day and in the evening?“
Qi Bo: „That's exactly what we've put together, Your Majesty.“
🌱 The 3-way method: perfect support for the transformation
🌅 TOMORROW PROTOCOL (Warm the center, start the transformation)
- TCM: Warm breakfast - congee, porridge or warm soup. The spleen needs warmth for the transformation.
- Science: Warm meals are metabolized faster and more completely. Protein-rich breakfasts provide the amino acids that phase II of liver detoxification needs.
- Practical: Rice congee with ginger and red dates. Or oat porridge with walnuts and cinnamon. With ginger water: 3 slices of fresh ginger, leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Before breakfast: tongue scraping - 5-10 times from back to front.
🌿 TAGS STRATEGY (move the liver, enable autophagy)
- TCM: Bitter substances stimulate the flow of bile. Lateral expansion opens the Liver meridian. Real breaks between meals give the spleen space.
- Science: Bitter substances stimulate bile production and improve fat digestion. 4-5 hours without snacking activates cellular autophagy. Walking for 20 minutes improves blood flow to the liver.
- Practical: Half the plate is green at lunchtime - spinach, chard, broccoli. Before eating: 3 leaves of radicchio or 1 tablespoon of artichoke juice. 20 min. walk without podcast. No snacking between meals.
🌙 EVENING PROTOCOL (support phase II, prepare for the night)
- TCM: The liver regenerates between 1 and 3 a.m. - but only during sleep. A liver compress with yarrow promotes blood circulation. A protein nightcap nourishes the kidney essence.
- Science: During sleep, liver blood flow increases by up to 40%. The glymphatic system cleanses the brain - exclusively during deep sleep. Amino acids before sleep support phase II during the night.
- Practical: Last meal before 7 pm. Bitter shot 20 minutes later (1 tbsp artichoke juice or dandelion tincture). Protein nightcap around 8 pm (bone broth or almond milk with almond paste). Liver compress with yarrow 3-4 times a week. Go to bed before 11 pm.
The key lies in three systems
The Yellow Emperor: „That was impressive. But I suspect that there is much more to each of these systems than we were able to discuss today?“
Qi Bo: „That's right, Your Majesty. Each of these three systems has its own weakness, its own signs, its own tools. The interrelationships are too complex for a single conversation. We have therefore written them down in detail - with specific instructions for each day, a bitter herb pharmacy, acupressure points and an evening protocol that brings everything together.“
Dr. Weber: „You can find the full guide on our site - including the two-phase detox, why autophagy is more important than any cure, and how to support all three systems.“

Instead of detox: the three forces that really cleanse you
The Yellow Emperor: „Spleen, liver, kidneys - three systems that we support, not starve. But are there herbs that specifically promote this transformation?“
Qi Bo: „Majesty, for thousands of years we have been using recipes that start right there: Warming the center and getting the liver energy flowing. Two classics that complement each other perfectly.“
Dr. Weber: „What convinces me about these formulas is that the main herb in the liver formula - bupleurum - has been shown in studies to have an anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effect. And the combination with a spleen-strengthening formula makes pharmacological sense: the liver needs the flow, the spleen provides the basis.“
🌿 Support the transformation - strengthen the center and liver
Qí Bó & Wolfgang recommend:
Strategy 1 - Warm the center, start the transformation: Your digestion is sluggish, your stomach feels cold, you are tired after eating. The spleen needs warmth to transform - without yang fire, everything stays put. What is not transformed remains in the system as dampness and heaviness.
1st product of the month:
W08 - Warm center
Qi Bo: „We learned today that the spleen is the powerhouse of transformation. But a powerhouse needs fire. If the center is cold, the transformation stops - food does not become qi and blood, but moisture and phlegm. This classic recipe ignites the yang fire in the center - where transformation begins.“
What W08 does for you:
- Ignite the yang fire - the warming power that drives your digestion and makes transformation possible in the first place
- Strengthens the spleen transformation - so that food becomes clear energy again instead of heaviness and fog
- Dissolves cold and moisture - for flatulence, soft stools, a feeling of heaviness and a cold stomach
Who is it ideal for?
✓ If you get tired after eating and have a bloated stomach
✓ If you are prone to soft stools, a cold feeling in your stomach or loss of appetite
✓ If you want to lay the foundations for a functioning transformation - because without a warm center, there is no transformation
⏱ Take for 4-8 weeks, ideally in combination with a hot breakfast.
Strategy 2 - Get the liver flowing: You feel pressure under your ribs, are irritable, digestion stagnates. Your liver energy is stagnating - and with it the phase II detoxification that we learned about today.
2nd product of the month:
W07 - Small bupleurum really big
Qi Bo: „What makes this formula special is that it moves the liver without weakening the center. The largest proportion - over 30 percent - is Dang Shen, a powerful Qi strengthener. Bupleurum gets the liver flowing, but Dang Shen ensures that the spleen is not left empty-handed. This is wise herbalism: moving and nourishing at the same time.“
Dr. Weber: „And that makes pharmacological sense. Studies have shown that bupleurum has an anti-inflammatory and liver-protective effect. Huang Qin - the second largest component - cools rising liver heat. Together they support both phases of liver detoxification that we have discussed today.“
The classic 7-herb recipe:
- Dang Shen 30.5% - The „Qi-strengthener“, nourishes the center and gives the liver the strength it needs to flow - the foundation of the recipe
- Chai Hu (Bupleurum) 20% - The „liver mover“, releases Qi stagnation and supports liver detoxification
- Xuan Fu Hua 17% - The „downward guide“, lowers rising Qi and releases phlegm
- Huang Qin 15% - The „heat clarifier“, cools rising liver heat and has an anti-inflammatory effect
- Plus 3 more herbs, release moisture, protect the center and harmonize the formula
Who is it ideal for?
✓ Those who suffer from pressure, tension and irritability - typical signs of liver Qi stagnation
✓ If you have elevated liver values or want to specifically support your liver
✓ Anyone who has digestive problems related to stress and tension
✓ If you want to promote phase II detoxification of the liver in a natural way
⏱ Take for 4-8 weeks. Ideal in combination with W08 - the liver needs the flow, the spleen provides the basis.
Strategy 3 - Build first, then improve the transformation: You're not just tired - you're exhausted. Even after sleeping, you lack strength. Your qi is depleted. Before the liver can flow and the spleen can transform, the basic energy must first be restored.
3rd product of the month:
W14 - Qi build-up
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, there is a principle that the old masters taught us: You cannot move what is not there. And you cannot warm what has no fuel. Some of your subjects are so exhausted that neither W08 nor W07 can take hold - because the basic energy is missing. Then we first need Si Jun Zi Tang - the ‚Four Nobles‘. They rebuild the qi from the ground up.“
What W14 does for you:
- Builds up Qi - the basic formula for every form of Qi deficiency for thousands of years
- Strengthens the digestive power - in case of lack of appetite, soft stools and pallor
- Gives you back your strength - for exhaustion, weak voice and spontaneous sweating
Qi Bo: „And this is how you proceed:“
Stage 1 (week 1-6): W14 alone. First the foundation. Your body gathers strength, the spleen regains the energy to be able to work at all.
Stage 2 (from week 7): W14 + W08 together. Now there is enough Qi and we ignite the Yang fire in the center. The spleen begins to transform completely again.
Stage 3 (from week 10-12): W08 + W07 The center is warm, the strength is there - now we get the liver flowing. W14 can be discontinued or continued as a maintenance dose.
Dr. Weber: „This is pharmacologically conclusive. Si Jun Zi Tang provides the building blocks for the spleen to produce energy again. Only when this basis is in place can W08 ignite the yang fire sustainably. And only when the center is warm and strong does the liver have enough strength to restore its flow. The sequence is crucial.“
Who is the step-by-step plan for?
✓ If you feel fundamentally exhausted - not just tired, but powerless
✓ Anyone who sweats during light exertion and is quickly out of breath
✓ Anyone who has tried many things but nothing has had a lasting effect - because the basis was missing
Not sure where you stand? The free TCM analysis helps you to find out whether you can start directly with W08 + W07 or whether the step-by-step plan via W14 is the better way.
💊 Taking TCM herbs correctly - why more tablets and more time?
Western medicines are isolated single molecules in high concentrations - one active ingredient, one target. Like an arrow: fast and precise. That's why a single tablet is often enough.
TCM herbal mixtures work differently. Each formula contains five to fifteen plants with hundreds of compounds that work in synergy - like an orchestra, not a soloist. The individual dose per compound is lower, but the sum unfolds a broad, profound effect. This is why more tablets are needed per intake - and why the side effects are generally milder.
And why so long? Western painkillers suppress symptoms in an hour - but the cause remains. TCM herbs change the pattern that creates the discomfort. The difference is like between a painkiller and physiotherapy: the painkiller works immediately, but physiotherapy heals. And healing takes time.
As a rule of thumb:
✓ Dosage: 2x daily 4-6 tablets (depending on the formula)
✓ Duration: 6-12 weeks so that the body can really change its pattern
✓ Intake: Preferably with warm water, 30 minutes before or after eating
Wisdom to take away
The Yellow Emperor: „So people don't need a ‚detox‘ - they need to trust their own bodies?“
Qi Bo: „That's right, Your Majesty. The spleen does not want to starve - it wants to transform. The liver doesn't want to be empty - it wants to flow. The kidney doesn't want to be stressed - it wants to be allowed to rest. Give them that, and your body will do what it has been doing for thousands of years.“
Dr. Weber: „And the amazing thing is that the most effective things are the simplest. Eat warm. Exercise. Sleep before midnight. Real breaks between meals. Less sugar. Your body has billions of years of evolution behind it. It knows how to cleanse. It doesn't need guidance - it needs support.“
The Yellow Emperor: „Then may the center be warm, the liver flow freely and the kidney rest. Improve purification without mortification - that is true wisdom!“
Preview May
The Yellow Emperor: „In May, we are devoting ourselves to what determines the night - the Shen, the spirit that lives in the heart. And the question: Why do so many people lie awake at night?“
Qi Bo: „When the heart-blood is weak, the spirit has no home. It floats - and you lie awake. The organ clock tells you which system needs help.“
Dr. Weber: „And I'll explain why your wake-up time is no coincidence - and what chronobiology has to say about it.“
About our „3 Wise Men“ story
Who are the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo?
The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi, 黄帝) is said to have lived around 2600 BC and is regarded as the mythical founder of Chinese culture and medicine. Qi Bo was his most important advisor and personal physician. Their discussions about health, illness and human nature were recorded in the most important fundamental work of TCM.
The book: Huangdi Neijing
The „Huangdi Neijing“ (黄帝内经), also known as „The Yellow Emperor - The Fundamental Work of Traditional Chinese Medicine“, was probably written between 200 BC and 200 AD. It is the oldest surviving work of Chinese medicine and consists of dialogues between the Yellow Emperor and his advisors - mainly Qi Bo.
This work is to TCM what the Bible is to Christianity: the absolute foundation. All the important concepts - yin and yang, the 5 elements, qi, meridians and acupuncture points - are systematically described here for the first time.
Our modern approach: The 3 wise men
In our series „The 3 Sages“, we bring the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo together with the fictional modern doctor and microbiologist Dr. Weber.
Important note: All three characters and their conversations are purely fictitious and invented by us.
We use this narrative form, similar to the dialog form in the book Huangdi Neijing, to convey the often complex relationships of TCM in an understandable and entertaining way. When the 4000-year-old emperor is confronted with modern science, enlightening „aha moments“ arise which show that ancient wisdom and new research often speak the same language: Ancient wisdom and new research often speak the same language - just in different words.
This makes TCM lively, understandable and practically applicable for your everyday life.
The dialogs are creative interpretations - not historical documents. For medical questions, please consult a qualified TCM therapist or doctor.
„The wise man nourishes life, he does not fight disease.“
