TCM background information

Tennis elbow - epicondylitis

Application: 2 times a day

These 3 acupuncture points represent a minimal program of local acupuncture points. It is a good way to improve the energetic supply of the elbow joint. This is the basic condition for healing of tennis elbow (epicondylitis).

Epicondylitis results from overuse of the forearm muscles. The muscles responsible for moving the fingers and wrist originate in part from a small bony prominence on the outside of the elbow. In tennis elbow, pain occurs in this area. This may eventually extend into the upper arm or forearm.

Small tears in the tendons that connect the muscles to the bone cause this pain. Overuse is likely to cause irritation of the tissue, which eventually causes inflammation. This condition most often affects people over the age of 40; women more often than men. The pain often goes away on its own, but in some sufferers it can last for years.

Triggers may include:

  • One-sided stress, e.g. when using keyboard/mouse
  • Monotonous movements at work, at home and in the garden These include movements in which the hand must grip forcefully with the elbow bent, as is the case when handling a hammer or other tool, for example.
  • Tennis and other impact sports
  • Sleeping posture in lateral position, with strongly bent arm as head support
  • Osteoarthritis: Chronic cartilage damage and osteoarthritis can also cause pain at the lateral epicondyle.

What does tennis elbow feel like?

Usually, increasing pain develops in the area above the bony prominence on the outside of the elbow, especially when you push the wrist up against resistance. In addition, you may notice a kind of weakness sensation in the wrist that does not allow you to access it properly.

In addition to the 3 points, it is recommended to relax the forearm muscles with a fascia ball. Simply place the arm with the outside of the forearm on such a ball and then massage the points with pressure until they gradually dissolve after repeated use.

Acupen

LI 11 "Curved pond" - Quchi

Toning point of the colon meridian

- Location:
With the elbow angled at 90 degrees, a crease is created between the upper arm and the forearm. At the end of the fold towards the elbow is the point in depth.

- Helps with:

High blood pressure, diarrhea, strengthen immune system, menstrual problems, colds, shoulder problems, tennis elbow, skin diseases.

Comment:

This item can be used similarly to Di04, the big difference being that Di04 specifically has a reference to the facial area that Di11 does not.

SI 08 "Sea of the small intestine" - Xiaohai

Relieves pain in the neck and shoulder area

- Location:

Between the ulnar process of the elbow (olecranon ulnae) and the tip of the medial (inner) epicondyle of the humerus, in a depression

- Helps with:

Elbow pain, shoulder joint pain, shoulder blade (scapula) pain, neck problems, tinnitus, hearing loss.

Comment:

In addition, the point Dü08 also has an effect on the mind and can therefore be used in addition to the points on the heart meridian, in case of anxiety.

Ht 03 "The little sea" - Shaohai

This is the so-called "good mood" point

- Location:

At the medial end of the elbow crease, above the medial (inner) epicondyle when the elbow is flexed.

- Helps with:

Headache, dizziness, stiff neck, elbow pain, forgetfulness, sleep disturbances.

Comment:

This point is used mainly for the elimination of cardiacFire which is why it has a calming effect on the psychological level and can therefore also improve depressive moods and simply has an emotionally relaxing and stabilizing effect. That's why I like to call it the "good mood point".

Qi Gong

The word Qi Gong consists of 2 syllables - Qi and Gong. The Chinese term "Qi" can be translated for us most likely by "life energy". But it contains more than this. It also means breath and air. In Chinese medicine, Qi is considered to be the invigorating force that flows through all living things. However, Qi is not only inside the body of a living being, but also outside. Qi also shows itself to us in nature. Thus animals, flowers and trees are flowed through by Qi. Qi is the living force that is inherent in everything and that makes life possible.
