ANGST has not come to stay.
She has come to be HEARD.
💧 The kidney and fear - an ancient connection
In TCM, each emotion is assigned to an organ:
- Liver → Anger
- Heart → Joy
- Spleen → Brooding
- Lungs → Grief
- Kidney → Anxiety
The kidney is your root system. It stores your Jing - your life essence. It governs your willpower, your stamina, your ability to withstand life.
If the kidney is strong:
- You feel grounded, secure, anchored
- You trust life - even when it's hard
- You have reserves for difficult times
- You sleep soundly and wake up refreshed
If the kidney is weakened:
- Fear without a concrete reason
- Waking up at night, especially between 3 and 5 a.m.
- The feeling of not being safe - within yourself
- Exhaustion that goes deeper than tiredness
- The will that fades
- The feeling: „I can't hold out much longer.“
The kidney is like a well. If it is full, you can draw from it - even in times of drought. If it is empty, you are reaching into nothingness. And this nothingness feels like fear.
🌑 Why at night?
Fear does not come by chance in the dark.
In TCM, the kidney belongs to the Water element. Water is yin - dark, still, deep. The night intensifies this energy.
In addition: The kidney time is between 5 and 7 p.m.. But their weakness often manifests itself in the second half of the night - when the yang is weakest and the yin dominates.
If you wake up between 3 and 5 a.m. (lung time), this can mean
→ The lungs mourn (grief, loss)
→ OR the kidney is no longer supporting itself - and the fear rises
Because in TCM: The kidney is the mother of the lung (in the control cycle). If the mother is weak, the child suffers.
🧠 The western bridge: Adrenal glands and fear
Science confirms the connection:
The adrenal glands: They sit directly on the kidneys and produce cortisol (stress hormone), adrenaline and noradrenaline. Chronic stress exhausts them - and anxiety increases.
The cortisol rhythm: Normally, cortisol is high in the morning (wakes you up) and low at night (allows you to sleep). With dysregulation, this is reversed: Cortisol rises at night - you lie awake, your heart races, your thoughts spin.
The HPA axis: Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. It regulates your stress response. When overloaded, it becomes hypersensitive - you react to small stimuli with great anxiety.
Generalized anxiety: People with chronic anxiety often have low cortisol levels during the day and high levels at night. The body is under constant stress - and can no longer distinguish between real danger and imagined danger.
Two worlds. One realization: The fear of the night is not imaginary - it is a sign of exhaustion.
⚠️ The signs of a weakened kidney
Do you recognize yourself here?
Physical:
- Lower back hurts or feels „empty“
- Cold feet that never get warm
- Nocturnal urination
- Knee pain or weakness
- Exhaustion that sleep does not cure
- Hair loss or early graying
- Dark circles under the eyes
Emotional:
- Anxiety without a specific trigger
- The feeling of not being safe
- Worries that go round in circles
- The will that fades
- The feeling: „My reserves are exhausted“
Mental:
- Nocturnal brooding
- Catastrophic thinking („What if...?“)
- Difficulties in trusting decisions
- The feeling of not being up to life
This is not weakness. It's a kidney that needs help.
🌿 The 5 pillars against night-time anxiety
1. heat from below - the kidney needs fire
Cold feet are not only unpleasant - they are a sign that the yang of the kidney is weak. And without yang, there is no safety.
Practical:
- Warm socks in bed (wool, no synthetics)
- Hot water bottle on the feet or lower back
- Warm foot bath before sleeping (15 minutes, possibly with ginger)
- Never walk barefoot on cold floors
The evening ritual:
- Fill a bowl with warm water
- Optional: Add a few slices of fresh ginger
- Soak feet for 15 minutes
- Doing nothing. No cell phone. Just breathe.
- Afterwards: Warm socks on, straight to bed
📣 Insider tip: Rub the soles of your feet vigorously with your hands after the footbath - especially the center (Ni 01). This immediately grounds and calms.
2. grounding - feeling the ground beneath your feet
Fear is a feeling of floating, of not being held.
The countermovement: Grounding.
Practical:
- Barefoot on grass, earth or sand (if the temperature permits)
- Stand up straight, feel your feet, breathe into your belly
- Heavy blanket for sleeping (weighted blanket)
- Nature: trees, forests, mountains - everything that is older than you
The 5-4-3-2-1 exercise (for acute anxiety)
- 5 things you SEE
- 4 things you HEAR
- 3 things you FEEL (touch)
- 2 things that you RIECHST
- 1 thing you TASTE
→ Brings you back into your body, out of your head.
3. sleep before midnight - the golden hours
The hours before midnight are the most valuable for kidney regeneration.
Practical:
- Goal: In bed before 10 pm
- 9 p.m.: Screens off, dim the lights
- Bedroom: Cool, dark, quiet
- No heavy meals after 7 p.m.
- No alcohol (massively disturbs deep sleep)
When you wake up at night:
- Don't look at the clock
- Do not take the cell phone
- Place your hand on your stomach, breathe slowly
- Tell yourself: „I am safe. I may rest.“
- Don't get up unless you have to go to the toilet
📣 Insider tip: A small spoonful of honey before going to sleep stabilizes blood sugar and can reduce night-time waking.
4. nourish the kidneys - black power packs
What you eat affects your anxiety more than you think.
Black foods for the kidneys:
- Black sesame seeds (1 tablespoon daily)
- Black beans
- Black rice
- Walnuts (look like a brain - nourish brain AND kidney)
- Dark berries
Warming food:
- Bone broth (deep heat)
- Stews, soups, braised dishes
- Ginger, cinnamon, cardamom
- Cooked breakfast (porridge, congee)
Avoid:
- Cold drinks, ice cream
- Raw food in the evening
- Too much coffee (exhausts the adrenal glands)
- Sugar in large quantities

5. naming fear - what has a name loses power
Diffuse fear is so powerful because it has no name. Give it one.
Practical - The Anxiety Journal:
- Put paper and pen next to your bed
- If you wake up at night or brood in the evening: write down
- Do not analyze. Do not solve. Just write it down
- Ask yourself: „What exactly is scaring me right now?“
- Write it down, as concretely as possible
- Then: Put the note away. Do not read it again
The power of speaking out:
- Talk to someone about your fears
- Not to find solutions
- But to be heard
- Fear that is shared is halved
What you don't say speaks within you.

⚠️ When the fear doesn't stop
There is a difference between the anxiety of an exhausted kidney and an anxiety disorder that needs professional help.
Seek support if:
- Fear massively restricts your everyday life
- You have panic attacks
- Anxiety does not get better despite self-help
- You have thoughts that frighten you
- You isolate yourself or no longer function
TCM can accompany and support - but it does not replace therapy.
💫 The deeper message
The fear that comes at night is not your enemy.
It is a message.
She says: „Something inside you is exhausted.“
She says: „You've been living off your reserves for too long.“
She says: „It's time to fill the well again.“
The kidney is your foundation.
If it is strong, you can withstand life - even when it is stormy. If it is weak, everything wobbles.
January is the darkest time. The coldest. The quietest.
But that is precisely why it is also the best time to nourish the kidneys.
Not to fight fear - but to hear it.
And to give her what she needs:
Warmth. Peace. Depth. Trust.
Fear doesn't go away by ignoring it.
It will go if you take care of its root.
And the root is in your kidney.
