Tired, empty, listless?

The February blues - and what really helps

It's February. And something is wrong. You sleep - but wake up tired. You function - but feel empty. You're waiting - but don't know what for.
The days are getting longer. Theoretically. But you don't feel it.

January was a retreat. That was okay. March brings new beginnings. That's still to come. But February? February is No man's land. Neither winter nor spring. Neither rest nor movement.
Just this tough in-between. And you in the middle. Stuck. Colorless. Joyless. Welcome to the February blues.

It's not winter that breaks you. It's the wait for spring.

It's not winter that breaks you. It's the wait for spring.

🧊 The toughest month

Ask people which month is the most difficult.
Most people say: February.

Not December (too much distraction).
Not January (still fresh resolutions).
But this gray, endless, forgotten month.

Why?

The body is exhausted:

  • The kidney reserves from the winter are used up
  • Vitamin D is at its lowest point
  • The immune system has been fighting for months
  • Melatonin production is still at „Hibernation

The soul is exhausted:

  • The darkness has accumulated
  • The isolation of winter continues to have an effect
  • The hope of spring is here - but still without proof

February is the moment before the battery dies. The last percent.

☯️ The TCM perspective: Between water and wood

In TCM, February is a Transition torque:

  • The water element (winter, kidney) is coming to an end.
  • The wood element (spring, liver) begins to stir.

But: the cold is still there.
The ascending Qi of the liver encounters resistance.
The result: Stagnation.

Like a river that wants to flow - but is still under ice.
The power is there. The path is blocked.

You feel that as:
→ Inner restlessness that finds no outlet
→ Irritability without a specific reason
→ Sigh to release pressure
→ Headache, especially at the temples
→ The feeling: „I want to - but I can't.“
→ Alternating sadness and frustration

The February blues are not imaginary.
It is the echo of a body stuck between two worlds.

🧠 The western bridge: What the science says

Research confirms what you feel:

Lack of light: The short days have disrupted your circadian rhythm for months. The pineal gland produces too much melatonin (sleep hormone) and too little serotonin (happiness hormone).

Vitamin D low: After months without sufficient sunshine, our stores are empty. Vitamin D affects mood, energy, immune system - everything.

Cortisol imbalance: The body is under chronic winter stress. The adrenal glands are exhausted. You are „wired but tired“ - fired up but exhausted.

SAD (seasonal affective disorder): The „winter blues“ is medically recognized. It affects up to 20% of the population - women more often than men.

Two worlds. One truth:
February is the most difficult month biologically AND energetically.

🕯️ The 5 pillars against the February blues

1. light is medicine

Your brain needs light like a plant.
Practical:

  • Immediately at the window in the morning (even in cloudy weather)
  • 20-30 minutes outside every day, no matter how gray
  • Light therapy lamp (10,000 lux), 30 minutes in the morning
  • In the evening: subdued lighting, candles instead of uplights

📣 Insider tip: The first 30 minutes after waking up decide your day. Light in your eyes - immediately.

2. movement that moves the Qi

Stagnation is solved by movement - but the right kind.
Not: Exhausting training that further depletes your reserves
But rather: gentle, flowing movement that opens up

  • Qi Gong (ideal for liver Qi stagnation)
  • Yoga (especially twists and side stretches)
  • Walk with conscious breathing
  • Dancing (yes, really - the liver loves expression)

Exercise in February should open you up - not exhaust you.

3. sour makes you happy - and moves the liver

The liver loves the sour taste.
It moves the Qi and releases stagnation.
Install:

  • Lemon in warm water (in the morning)
  • Sauerkraut (probiotic and sour)
  • Apple cider vinegar (1 teaspoon in water before eating)
  • Fermented vegetables

But: Do not overdo it. Too much acid exhausts the liver again.

📣 Insider tip: Warm water with lemon and a pinch of turmeric and pepper in the morning — stimulates the qi and warms you up at the same time.

4. let your feelings out - don't swallow them

The liver hates suppression.
Every swallowed anger, every unspoken truth stagnates the Qi.
Practical:

  • Writing (diary, letters that you don't send)
  • Talking (with someone who listens)
  • Crying (when it comes - leave it)
  • Screaming (into the pillow, in the car, in the forest)
  • Being creative (painting, making music, cooking)

February is not the month to function. It is the month to feel.

5. further strengthen the kidneys

Winter is not over yet.
The kidney still needs care.

  • Sleep early (before 11 pm)
  • Keep warm (especially feet and lower back)
  • Black foods (sesame seeds, beans, walnuts)
  • Don't overwork, don't overtrain

📣 Insider tip: The black rice congee - nourishes the kidneys, warms the center, gives strength for the transition.
