What is a kidney yang deficiency?
When the fire of the gate of life goes out
The TCM perspective: The Ming Men - the root of all Yang
In traditional Chinese medicine, kidney yang is the root of all yang in the body. It is the original fire that warms all other organs and drives all life processes. At the center is the Ming Men - the „gate of life“ - the seat of the original fire between the two kidneys.
The kidney stores the Jing - the essence of life - and controls the bones, the marrow and the brain. Kidney Yang not only warms the lower back and legs, but also supports the bladder, reproduction and willpower. When the Ming Men fire goes out, the entire body loses its source of heat.
Kidney yang deficiency often develops gradually - through chronic exhaustion, exposure to cold, excessive sexual activity, ageing or prolonged illness. The fire in the gate of life burns weaker and weaker until the body loses its ability to generate and retain heat.
The result of a kidney yang deficiency: The Ming Men fire no longer burns sufficiently. The lower back becomes cold and weak, the feet remain icy and the bladder loses its control. The kidney can no longer retain the essence, which is reflected in diminishing willpower and sexual vitality.
The typical signs of kidney yang deficiency:
- Cold in the lower back and knees - like sitting on ice
- Cold feet and legs that don't warm up even under blankets
- Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
- Clear, copious urine without odor
- Impotence in men, frigidity and infertility in women
- Edema, especially on the legs and face (in the morning)
- Weak, aching lower back - worse with cold and fatigue
- Pale face with a dark or grayish undertone
- Lack of drive and weak willpower
The good news: The kidney yang can be rebuilt with patience. Through warming nutrition, Yang-tonifying herbs, moxibustion on the lower back and targeted Qi Gong exercises, you can rekindle the fire of your life gate and regain your vitality.
The Western perspective: Adrenal glands and thermoregulation
From a Western perspective, kidney yang deficiency corresponds to a combination of adrenal exhaustion, impaired thermoregulation and hormonal imbalance. The adrenal glands - which are located on the kidneys - produce vital hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline and aldosterone, which control the energy balance and stress response.
Imagine the Ming Men as an internal furnace burning in the center of your body: in the case of kidney yang deficiency, this fire has burned down to a faint glow. The body no longer produces enough heat, the extremities cool down and even thick socks don't help against the cold from within.
The kidneys also play a central role in the water balance in Western medicine. In the case of kidney yang deficiency, the body can no longer transform fluids properly - this results in frequent urination and, at the same time, water retention (oedema). TCM explains this apparent paradox by saying that the yang is no longer strong enough to move and transform the fluids.
What does modern medicine show?
- Adrenal insufficiency: low cortisol and DHEA levels impair energy and stress resistance
- Hypothyroidism: hypothyroidism increases cold intolerance
- Renal dysfunction: impaired water and electrolyte regulation leads to edema
- Reduced GFR: renal filtration is often slightly reduced
- Testosterone/oestrogen deficiency: hormonal imbalance affects libido and vitality
- Vitamin D deficiency: often associated with bone weakness and fatigue
- Peripheral vasoconstriction: constricted blood vessels in the extremities increase the sensation of cold
Modern research confirms: The interplay between the adrenal glands, thyroid and kidney function is complex. Chronic stress exhausts the adrenal glands, has a negative effect on the thyroid gland and can also impair kidney function in the long term - a vicious circle that TCM has described as kidney yang deficiency for thousands of years.
TCM treatment of kidney yang deficiency works on several levels: It warms the body from the inside, supports adrenal function, stimulates the metabolism and strengthens the kidneys. Warming foods, Yang-tonifying herbs and moxibustion on the Ming Men rekindle the inner fire - gently, profoundly and sustainably.
The Yellow Emperor | Qi Bo | Dr. Lisa Weber
Founder of TCM | Master of Healing Arts | Modern Physician
What happens when the legendary Yellow Emperor from TCM sits together with his advisor Qi Bo and a modern doctor? They explain YOUR diagnosis - with 4000 years of knowledge AND current science.
Kidney-Yang deficiency - When the fire of the gate of life goes out
The Yellow Emperor: „Qi Bo, I observe people in my realm whose lower back is constantly cold like a stone in a winter stream. Their feet are icy, they have to get up several times at night to urinate, and some show swollen ankles. Their willpower seems broken, as if someone had extinguished the flame of their lives. What is the cause of this deep suffering?“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, these people suffer from a deficiency of kidney yang - one of the most profound disorders we know. Kidney Yang is the root of all Yang in the body. The Ming Men fire, the fire of the gateway to life, burns in the kidneys. It is the original source of all warmth and activity. If this fire goes out, the entire body loses its warming power. The lower back, where the kidneys are located, becomes cold. The bladder can no longer transform and hold the water - hence the frequent urination at night. And without the Ming Men fire, a person lacks willpower, because the kidneys house the Zhi - the will.“
Dr. Weber: „That's a remarkable description! The kidneys actually play a central role in regulating the body. The adrenal glands, which sit directly on the kidneys, produce vital hormones: cortisol, aldosterone and the sex hormones DHEA and androgens. In the case of adrenal insufficiency - also known as adrenal fatigue - we see precisely these symptoms: sensitivity to cold, lack of energy, listlessness. The kidneys themselves regulate the water and electrolyte balance. A reduced ADH effect (antidiuretic hormone) leads to frequent urination, especially at night. And the kidneys activate vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and immune function.“
The Yellow Emperor: „What exactly is this Ming Men you're talking about?“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, the Ming Men - the gate of life or gate of life - sits between the two kidneys, at the level of the second lumbar vertebra. It is the place where the prenatal fire that was given to us by our parents burns. This fire warms all the organs: it helps the spleen to transform food. It supports the lungs in the distribution of Qi. It gives the heart the power to move the blood. It warms the uterus and enables fertility. Without the Ming Men fire, the entire body cools down like a house whose stove has gone out.“
Dr. Weber: „This is anatomically fascinating! It is precisely in this area - between L2 and L3 - that the celiac ganglion is located, an important nerve node of the autonomic nervous system. Many organ functions are controlled from here: digestion, blood circulation, metabolism. The adrenal glands in the immediate vicinity produce stress hormones and sex hormones. And the kidneys themselves produce erythropoietin for blood formation. It's amazing how TCM recognized the central importance of this region thousands of years ago!“
The Yellow Emperor: „What causes this life-gate fire to go out?“
Qi Bo: „There are many causes, Your Majesty. Firstly, constitutional weakness - some people are born with weak kidney yang, often if their parents were exhausted or too old when they were conceived. Second: Chronic overwork and exhaustion - it burns up Kidney Yang faster than it can regenerate. Thirdly, excessive sexual activity - it directly depletes Kidney Essence and Kidney Yang. Fourth, prolonged exposure to cold - especially cold and dampness penetrating the lower back. Fifth: Severe or chronic illness - it depletes Kidney Yang. And sixthly, natural ageing - kidney yang naturally declines from the age of 40.“
Dr. Weber: „This correlates surprisingly well with our findings! Adrenal function declines with age - DHEA levels fall continuously from the age of 30. Chronic stress leads to exhaustion of the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis). Testosterone in men decreases by around 1% per year from 40. Oestrogen production in women drops dramatically during the menopause. And in fact, studies show that chronic exposure to cold can impair kidney function. The TCM observations are remarkably accurate!“
The Yellow Emperor: „You mentioned that the kidneys house the will. Explain this in more detail!“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, each of the five main organs houses a spiritual aspect. The kidneys house the zhi - the will, the determination, the perseverance. When the kidney yang is strong, a person has a strong will, can pursue goals and overcome obstacles. They have stamina and perseverance. If the kidney yang is weak, this willpower is lacking. The person becomes anxious, because fear is the emotion of the kidneys when they are weak. They lose motivation, give up quickly and feel unable to cope with life. They no longer have any stamina.“
Dr. Weber: „This is highly interesting from a psychoneuroimmunological point of view! The adrenal glands produce cortisol and adrenaline - the hormones that enable us to act under stress. If the adrenal glands are weak, these activating hormones are missing, which leads to a lack of drive and increased anxiety. Low testosterone levels - in men and women - correlate with reduced motivation and willpower. And DHEA, which is also produced in the adrenal glands, has antidepressant properties. The link between the kidney region and willpower is neurobiologically sound!“
The Yellow Emperor: „What signs reveal a kidney yang deficiency?“
Qi Bo: „The signs are characteristic, Your Majesty. Physical signs: coldness in the lower back - it feels cold and longs for warmth. Cold feet and knees, even under the covers. Frequent urination, especially at night - called nocturia. Water retention in the legs and ankles. Weak, aching lower back and weak knees. Dull pain that improves with warmth. Clear, copious urine. In men: Impotence or premature ejaculation. In women: Coldness in the uterus, infertility. The tongue is pale, moist, often swollen with tooth impressions. The pulse is deep and weak, especially at the kidney positions.“
Dr. Weber: „This constellation of symptoms is clinically very specific! Nocturia - frequent urination at night - can indicate reduced ADH production or kidney dysfunction. The edema occurs when the kidneys can no longer regulate the water properly. The back pain and knee weakness could be related to osteoporosis - the kidneys activate vitamin D, which is essential for bone health. Low testosterone levels lead to erectile dysfunction. And hypothyroidism - underactive thyroid gland - shows exactly these symptoms: coldness, fatigue, swollen tongue. In the laboratory, we often find elevated TSH levels, low free T3/T4 levels, low sex hormones and vitamin D deficiency.“
The Yellow Emperor: „How does kidney yang deficiency differ from general yang deficiency?“
Qi Bo: „An important distinction, Your Majesty! The general yang deficiency can affect various organs - spleen, heart, lungs. In kidney yang deficiency, the disorder lies at the root - because kidney yang is the source of all yang. The characteristic signs are Coldness is concentrated in the lower back and lower extremities. There are problems with urination and sexual function. The will and stamina are weakened. Anxiety increases. If the kidney yang is weak, the yang of all other organs will also be weakened over time - but the treatment must start at the root.“
Dr. Weber: „Clinically, this corresponds to the distinction between a general metabolic weakness and a specific adrenal or renal dysfunction. The adrenal glands, as the source of stress hormones and sex hormones, actually have an overriding regulatory function. When they are exhausted, other organ systems suffer secondarily - thyroid, immune system, reproductive system. The TCM hierarchy of yang corresponds to the endocrine hierarchy!“
The Yellow Emperor: „Now for the treatment. How can the extinguished fire of the Gate of Life be rekindled?“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, the treatment principle is: Wen Bu Shen Yang - warming and tonifying the Kidney Yang. The Ming Men fire must be gently and constantly rekindled. This is done in several ways: Firstly, through a strongly warming diet - lamb, walnuts, prawns, ginger, cinnamon and star anise directly nourish the kidney yang. Secondly, through moxibustion on specific points - especially Du 4 Min.g Men (Life Gate), Ren 4 Guanyuan (Gate to Source Energy) and Kidney 3 Taixi. Thirdly, by heat treatment of the lower back - daily and consistently. Fourth, through tonifying herbal formulas - You Gui Wan is the queen of Kidney Yang strengthening formulas.“
Dr. Weber: „These are excellent strategies! Lamb contains L-carnitine, which promotes mitochondrial fat burning and heat production. Walnuts provide omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants for hormone production. Prawns contain zinc and selenium, which are important for the thyroid gland and testosterone production. Ginger and cinnamon stimulate thermogenesis. Heat treatment in the lumbar region improves blood flow to the kidneys and adrenal glands. And studies have shown that moxibustion has positive effects on the autonomic nervous system and hormone regulation!“
The Yellow Emperor: „Tell me more about the herbal recipes!“
Qi Bo: „Majesty, the classic formula is You Gui Wan - the pill that restores the right. It contains: Shu Di Huang to nourish the Kidney essence. Shan Yao and Shan Zhu Yu to strengthen the Kidneys. Gou Qi Zi and Tu Si Zi to supplement the essence. And above all Du Zhong, Rou Gui and Fu Zi - the most powerful Yang warming herbs. This formula ignites the Ming Men fire, strengthens the lower back, promotes reproductive power and gives new strength to the will.“
Dr. Weber: „Some of these herbs have been scientifically studied! Du Zhong - Eucommia - has been shown in studies to have positive effects on bone health and blood pressure. Gou Qi Zi - Goji berries - contain antioxidants and support immune function. Rou Gui - cinnamon bark - improves insulin sensitivity and has thermogenic properties. However, I must warn: Fu Zi - Aconitum - is a highly potent herb with potentially toxic side effects. It should only be prescribed by experienced TCM therapists who use it in a processed, detoxified form!“
The Yellow Emperor: „Wonderful! Let's summarize this wisdom into a practical plan for people with kidney yang deficiency.“
THE 3-WAY METHOD FOR KIDNEY YANG DEFICIENCY
MORNING PROTOCOL (Awakening the Gate of Life):
- TCM: Warm, invigorating breakfast with warming ingredients - the extinguished kidney yang needs gentle warmth in the morning
- Science: A warm, protein-rich breakfast activates the metabolism and supports the release of cortisol in the morning
- Practical: Congee (rice soup) with walnuts and cinnamon. Or porridge with dates, ginger and a spoonful of sesame butter
- TCM: Heat treatment of the Ming Men - warm the gate of life every morning to kindle the fire
- Science: Applying heat to the lumbar region improves blood flow to the kidneys and adrenal glands and promotes hormone production
- Practical: Place a hot water bottle or heating pad on the lower back for 15-20 minutes - exactly at the level of the second lumbar vertebra, between the kidneys
- TCM: Ginger and cinnamon tea - two of the strongest yang-warming spices for a powerful start
- Science: Gingerol and cinnamaldehyde stimulate thermogenesis and improve blood circulation
- Practical: Pour hot water over 3 slices of fresh ginger + 1/2 a cinnamon stick, leave to infuse for 10 minutes, sweeten with a little honey
TAGS-STRATEGY (build up kidney yang):
- TCM: Acupressure on Kidney 3 (Taixi) and Du 4 (Ming Men) - the most important points for strengthening Kidney Yang
- Science: Stimulation of these points shows positive effects on adrenal function and energy metabolism in studies
- Practical: Ni 3: In the hollow between the inner ankle and Achilles tendon - massage vigorously in a circular motion for 3 minutes on each side. Du 4: On the lower back between L2 and L3 - gently tap or rub with your fist
- TCM: Gentle movement that nourishes the yang without exhausting it - moderate activity strengthens the kidney yang
- Science: Moderate exercise stimulates hormone production and improves mitochondrial function
- Practical: 20-30 min. walk in the sun, gentle Qi Gong to strengthen the kidneys, light stretching exercises for the lower back. No exhausting activities!
- TCM: Warming midday meal with kidney-yang strengthening foods
- Science: Protein-rich, warm meals with specific nutrients support hormone production
- Practical: Lamb soup with ginger and spring onions. Or prawn soup with garlic. Walnuts as a snack. Everything warm and cooked - no raw food!
EVENING RITUAL (preserve kidney yang):
- TCM: Warm foot bath with warming herbs - opens the kidney meridians and draws warmth deep into the body
- Science: Warm foot baths improve circulation, promote relaxation and can support hormone regeneration at night
- Practical: 20 min. foot bath at 40-42 °C with ginger slices and a pinch of cinnamon. Gently massage the feet, especially kidney 1 on the sole of the foot
- TCM: Heat treatment of Ren 4 (Guanyuan) - warming and sealing the gateway to the original energy
- Science: Heat stimulation in the lower abdomen influences the parasympathetic nervous system and promotes nocturnal regeneration
- Practical: Place the hot water bottle on the lower abdomen for 15 minutes - approx. 4 finger widths below the navel. Then keep the lower back warm
- TCM: Go to bed early and keep your lower back warm - the kidney yang regenerates in the deep yin hours of the night
- Science: Deep sleep promotes the release of growth hormone and the regeneration of adrenal hormones
- Practical: Sleep before 11 pm. Kidney warmer or warm cloth around the lower back. Keep feet warm with socks. Bedroom not too cold
The Yellow Emperor: „Qi Bo, how long will it take for the Ming Men fire to burn again?“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, strengthening the kidney yang is like rekindling a fire that has almost gone out - it takes patience, consistency and the right fuels. Kidney yang is the root of all yang, so it takes longer to strengthen than other organs. After 2-3 weeks of consistent practice, most people notice that their lower back becomes warmer, their feet are less icy cold and they urinate less frequently at night. After 6-8 weeks you will notice: more energy in the morning, a stronger back, more drive and willpower, less anxiety. After 3-6 months, the kidney yang can be noticeably strengthened: The body can retain heat, vitality returns, vitality is restored.“
Dr. Weber: „This corresponds to our clinical experience! The regeneration of adrenal function after chronic fatigue typically takes 3-6 months. Thyroid regulation takes a similar amount of time for a stable improvement. The increase in sex hormones shows first effects after 4-8 weeks, full effect after 3-4 months. Patience is the key here - the endocrine system needs time to recover!“
The Yellow Emperor: „What must be avoided at all costs?“
Qi Bo: „Your Majesty, when it comes to kidney yang deficiency, prevention is just as important as treatment! First: Cold and raw foods - they are poison for the already weak digestive fire and cool the body further. Second: Cold drinks, especially ice water - they extinguish the Ming Men fire directly. Thirdly, cold exposure of the lower back - it is essential to keep this area warm. Fourth: Excessive physical exertion - it burns the precious Yang needed for regeneration. Fifth: Excessive sexual activity - it directly depletes Kidney Yang. Sixth, going to bed too late and lack of sleep - the yang cannot regenerate.“
Dr. Weber: „Everything is scientifically comprehensible! Cold food requires additional metabolic energy to warm up - this is counterproductive if the system is already exhausted. Cold in the lumbar region can impair kidney function and the local metabolism. Overtraining with adrenal insufficiency leads to further exhaustion instead of strengthening. Lack of sleep massively disrupts hormone regeneration - growth hormone, testosterone and cortisol are mainly produced at night. And sexual activity consumes considerable energy - when the kidney yang is exhausted, temporary rest is important for regeneration!“
The Yellow Emperor: „Then the message is clear: the kidney yang is the fire of the gateway to life, the source of all warmth, strength and willpower. With warming food, constant heat treatment of the lower back, gentle exercise and sufficient rest, we can rekindle this precious fire.“
Qi Bo: [smiles] „That's right, Your Majesty. The Ming Men fire is like the sun in the body - all life depends on its power. Those who nurture and nourish their life gate will be filled with inner warmth even in the depths of winter. Stamina returns, fear gives way to confidence and the life force flows into every corner of the body again.“
About our „3 Wise Men“ story
Who are the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo?
The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) is said to have lived around 2600 BC and is considered the mythical founder of Chinese culture and medicine. Qi Bo was his most important advisor and personal physician. Their discussions about health, illness, and human nature were recorded in the most important fundamental work of TCM.
The book: Huangdi Neijing
The Huangdi Neijing, also known as The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, was probably written between 200 BC and 200 AD. It is the oldest surviving work on Chinese medicine and consists of dialogues between the Yellow Emperor and his advisors, mainly Qi Bo.
This work is to TCM what the Bible is to Christianity: the absolute foundation. All important concepts—yin and yang, the five elements, qi, meridians, and acupuncture points—are described systematically here for the first time.
Our modern approach: The 3 wise men
In our series „The Three Sages,“ we bring together the Yellow Emperor and Qi Bo with the fictional modern doctor and microbiologist Dr. Weber.
Important note: All three characters and their conversations are purely fictitious and invented by us.
We use this narrative form, similar to the dialog form in the book Huangdi Neijing, to convey the often complex relationships of TCM in an understandable and entertaining way. When the 4000-year-old emperor is confronted with modern science, enlightening „aha moments“ arise which show that ancient wisdom and new research often speak the same language: Ancient wisdom and new research often speak the same language - just in different words.
This makes TCM lively, understandable and practically applicable for your everyday life.
The dialogs are creative interpretations - not historical documents. For medical questions, please consult a qualified TCM therapist or doctor.

BS+ was developed to support your daily fiber supply. With 11 high-quality, natural ingredients BS+ offers your intestinal flora a diverse nutrient base.
The revolutionary fiber formula
BS+ Dietary Fiber Plus
- Up to 20 g dietary fiber daily EXTRA
- Improved digestion and regular bowel movements
- Increased energy and vitality
- Better mood and mental clarity
- Support for your immune system
- Potential improvement in cholesterol and blood sugar levels
Simply stir into water twice a day - Your intestinal flora will thank you.
Why BS+ for kidney yang deficiency?
In the case of kidney yang deficiency, the body lacks the warming power of the kidneys - the Ming Men fire, the gateway to life, no longer burns sufficiently. In TCM, kidney yang also warms the spleen and the entire digestive tract. If this fire is missing, digestion slows down, cold spreads in the lower warmer and undigested food residues burden the intestines. The intestinal flora becomes impoverished, cloudy moisture accumulates and the already weakened kidney energy is further burdened.
BS+ delivers 11 prebiotic fibers and thus specifically supports the development of a diverse intestinal flora. A well-nourished intestinal flora relieves the digestive tract, helps to reduce cold and moisture in the lower warmer and creates the basis for the warming power of the kidneys to recover step by step.
Particularly important for kidney yang deficiency:
- Relieves the digestive tract, which is slowed down by the cold, and supports food utilization
- Helps to break down cloudy moisture in the lower warmer - where kidney yang is needed most
- Strengthens the intestinal environment as a basis for the recovery of the Ming Men fire and the entire Yang energy
Acupressure
Acupressure is acupuncture without needles. - you can apply them yourself at any time. By applying gentle pressure to certain points, you activate the energy flow in the meridians and strengthen the kidney yang.
The following three points form the classic combination for strengthening kidney yang. The combination with moxibustion is particularly effective for kidney yang deficiency - a heat treatment with mugwort, which additionally nourishes the yang and ignites the fire of the gate of life.
ACUPUNCTURE POINT: Ni 03

Rub or tap with the knuckles twice a day for 30-45 seconds. Heat (moxibustion or hot water bottle) considerably increases the effect.
ACUPUNCTION POINT: Bl 23
Bubble 23
Nierenshu - Shèn Shū
- Back Shu point of the kidney - direct access to kidney energy
- Strengthens the kidney yang and yin
- Nourishes the essence (Jing)
- Strengthens the lower back and knees
- Regulates urination
Location: 1.5 cun lateral to the midline, at the level of the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra (L2). At the same height as you 04.
Application:
Press twice daily for 30-45 seconds on both sides with the thumbs or knuckles. Ideal in combination with Du 04. Moxibustion is particularly effective.
TIP
Moxibustion
Heat treatment for kidney yang deficiency
The ideal complement to acupressure for kidney yang deficiency. Moxibustion uses smouldering mugwort to bring heat deep into the acupuncture points. This method has been tried and tested for thousands of years to strengthen the kidney yang and kindle the fire of the gateway to life.
TIP
AkuPen

For even more intense stimulation You can use an AkuPen. The acupressure pen significantly enhances the effect of acupressure. With an extensive video library for over 80 acupuncture points.
Qi Gong
Qi Gong is moving meditation - Gentle, flowing exercises that harmonize your energy flow and strengthen your Qi. In the case of kidney yang deficiency, these exercises help to rekindle the fire of your life gate (Ming Men), warm the kidney region and strengthen your vitality.
Regular practice of Qi Gong (as little as 10-15 minutes a day) has been shown to have positive effects on kidney energy, heat circulation and general well-being.
QI GONG: Exercise 1
Activate the gate of life
Warms the Ming Men, strengthens the kidney yang
Particularly helpful for:
- Cold in the lower back
- Exhaustion and weakness
- Cold feet and hands
- Frequent urination at night
Effect:
This classic water element exercise activates the Ming Men (life gate) directly by gently tapping the kidney area. The forward bend relaxes the kidney region, while the tapping releases congestion and warms and strengthens the kidney yang.
QI GONG: Exercise 2
Kidneys circles
Relaxes the fasciae, nourishes the kidney energy
Particularly helpful for:
- Tense lower back
- Lack of energy and listlessness
- Hormonal imbalances
- General sensitivity to cold
Effect:
The circular arm movements and forward bend relax the fasciae of the lower back in particular. This exercise promotes blood circulation in the kidney region and supports the regeneration of the kidney yang through gentle stimulation.
QI GONG: Exercise 3
Warm the center
Stimulates the kidneys, warms the lower back
Particularly helpful for:
- Cold in the center of the body
- Weakness in the lower back
- Bladder weakness
- Lack of willpower
Effect:
The hands on the lower back direct your focus to the kidney area. The gentle twisting movement of the upper body stimulates the kidney and bladder energy and brings warmth to the center of the body - ideal for kidney yang deficiency.
These Qi Gong exercises are specially selected to strengthen the kidney yang. They activate the Ming Men (life gate), warm the kidney region and help to rebuild vitality and willpower.
All exercises work particularly well if you practise them between 5 and 7 pm - this is the kidney's peak time in the organ clock. The early evening hours between 3 and 5 pm (bladder time) are also ideal, as the bladder and kidneys form an organ pair.
QI GONG:
When and how often?
In the evening (ideal):
- All 3 exercises as a sequence: approx. 15–20 min.
- Or just 1–2 exercises: approx. 5–10 min.
- Best between 5 and 7 pm (kidney time) or in the late afternoon
In between:
- Individual exercises if required (e.g. if you feel cold in your back)
- „Activate the life gate“ for rapid heat supply
Regularity is more important than duration:
- It is better to exercise for 10 minutes every day than for 60 minutes once a week.
- After 2–3 weeks, you will notice the first changes.
- After 3 months of regular practice: significantly stronger kidney yang
Pro tip: Practice these exercises in a warm, sheltered place. With Kidney Yang deficiency, it is particularly important not to get cold while practicing. Wear warm clothing (especially in the kidney area) and avoid cold feet - warm socks or a hot water bottle for the lower back before practicing can help.

More about Qi Gong LiveMeridian Yoga — The Yoga of TCM
Meridian Yoga combines yoga with traditional Chinese medicine. The result is a holistic exercise concept for better health and more energy.
The following exercises specifically activate the Governing Vessel (Du Mai) - and this is particularly important for Kidney Yang deficiency: the Governing Vessel originates in the pelvic cavity and has an inner branch that leads directly to the kidneys. At point Du 4 (Ming Men) - the „gate of life“ - the Governing Vessel connects with the fire of the kidneys. By activating the Du Mai, the Ming Men fire is kindled and the kidney yang is directly strengthened.
MERIDIAN YOGA: Exercise 1
Roundback for the handlebar receptacle
Activates the handlebar vascular system while standing
Particularly helpful for:
- Cold in the lower back and Ming Men area
- Exhaustion and lack of drive
- Weak lower back and cold knees
- Lack of inner warmth and vitality
Effect:
The controlled rounding of the back while standing activates the lumbar vessels along the entire spine. The movement starts in the pelvis and stretches the entire back - exactly where the Du Mai runs. This exercise warms the Ming Men area and strengthens the Kidney Yang.
MERIDIAN YOGA: Exercise 2
Swivel seat for the handlebar receptacle
Classic yoga exercise for yang activation
Particularly helpful for:
- Stiffness and coldness in the spine
- Lack of energy and tiredness due to kidney yang deficiency
- Weak lower back
- Lack of inner warmth and willpower
Effect:
The twisting pose is a classic yoga exercise that activates the limb vessels by gently rotating the spine. The rotating movement promotes the flow of yang and releases blockages in the entire back - particularly beneficial for kidney-yang deficiency with feelings of coldness in the lumbar region.
Both exercises activate the Governing Vessel (Du Mai), which controls all Yang meridians as the „Sea of Yang“. Particularly important in the case of Kidney Yang deficiency: the Du Mai runs directly over the Ming Men point (Du 4) - the „Gate of Life“. This point is the external connection to Kidney Yang and the Ming Men fire. By activating the Governing Vessel, the fire of the Gate of Life is kindled.
Particularly effective: Hold each position for 3-5 breaths, visualizing warm energy rising up your spine from the Ming Men point and warming your entire body.
MERIDIAN YOGA:
When and how often?
Best time:
- In the morning after getting up (Yang rises naturally)
- Or at lunchtime during the most active Yang time (11 am - 1 pm)
Duration:
- Hold each position for 3-5 breaths.
- Complete sequence: 10-15 minutes
- 3-5 times per week for best results
Important for kidney yang deficiency:
- Make sure you practise in a warm room (avoid cold!)
- Warm your lower back with your hands beforehand
- Breathe deeply into your stomach during the positions
- Stretching should be comfortable, never painful.
Pro tip: Combine Meridian Yoga with the Qi Gong exercise „Activate the Life Gate“. Both methods together strengthen the kidney yang particularly effectively.
Nutrition according to TCM
„Let food be your medicine.“ - This principle has been valid in TCM for thousands of years. In the case of kidney yang deficiency, the right diet is particularly important for rekindling your vital fire.
The kidney yang belongs to the Element Water and needs warm to hot, nourishing food, to strengthen the Ming Men fire again. Warming foods and hearty soups have a special relationship with kidney yang.
What you eat, HOW you eat and WHEN what you eat - all of this influences your vital fire and your vitality.

Breathing
Breathing is the bridge between body and mind. In TCM, we say: „The lungs govern qi“ — through conscious breathing, you can directly influence your energy flow, harmonize all organ systems, and activate your self-healing powers.
Studies show: Proper breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & regeneration), massages the internal organs from within, improves oxygen supply, and reduces stress hormones. The good news: Just 5–10 minutes a day can have a measurable effect on your overall well-being.

relaxation
When your body is relaxed, all organ systems can function optimally. Chronic tension blocks your body's self-healing powers and keeps you in a state of constant stress. Through targeted relaxation techniques, you activate the parasympathetic nervous system and send your body the signal: „Now I can regenerate, heal, and build strength.“
Progressive muscle relaxation is one of the most researched relaxation methods and has been used successfully for over 100 years. It helps you to recognize tension, actively release it, and achieve a state of deep relaxation—whenever you want.

More tips for your everyday life
In addition to traditional TCM treatment methods there are many small everyday habits that can strengthen your kidney yang. In TCM, kidney yang is the fire of your gateway to life - with the right habits, you can build and maintain it effectively.
Supplying heat from outside
🔥 Keep the lower back warm
The Ming Men (life gate) needs constant warmth:
- Wear a kidney warmer or body warmer - especially in winter
- Tuck your undershirts into your pants so that your back remains covered
- Place a hot water bottle on the lower back - 20 minutes a day
- Never sit on cold surfaces (stone, metal, cold benches)
- Protect the lumbar region from draughts in summer too
🌡️ Heat therapy
Active heat supply strengthens the kidney yang:
- Moxibustion on Du 04 (Ming Men) and Bl 23 (Shenshu) - very effective
- Infrared lamp on the lower back - 15-20 minutes daily
- Warm foot baths with ginger or cinnamon before sleeping
- Hot compresses on the kidney area and lower back
- Sauna in moderation - don't exhaust yourself, but add warmth
🦶 Keep your feet warm
Cold feet indicate kidney yang deficiency - warm them:
- Wear warm socks - even indoors
- Never walk barefoot on a cold floor
- Warm foot baths in the evening (with ginger, cinnamon or salt)
- Foot massage with warming oil (ginger or cinnamon oil)
- Acupressure on Ni 01 (Yongquan) - warms the kidneys
Adapt your lifestyle
🌙 Go to bed early
The kidneys regenerate at night:
- Go to bed before 11 p.m. - 10 p.m. is ideal
- The hours before midnight are particularly valuable for the kidneys
- 7-8 hours of sleep are optimal for kidney regeneration
- Keep to regular sleeping times - the body loves rhythm
- Sleep a little longer in winter - collect the yang
⚖️ Do not overwork
Overwork depletes the kidney essence:
- Take regular breaks - every 90 minutes
- No night shifts or extreme overtime
- Allow yourself to rest when exhausted - don't push yourself to the limit
- Keeping work and relaxation in balance
- Chronic stress depletes the kidney yang
💫 Preserve all your energy
The kidneys store the essence (Jing):
- Sexual activity in moderation - do not exhaust it
- In case of severe kidney yang deficiency: temporarily reduce
- Quality over quantity - mindful intimacy
- Qi Gong exercises to cultivate the essence
- Sufficient rest and food after sexual activity
Prefer gentle movement
🧘 Qi Gong and Tai Chi
These exercises strengthen the kidney yang without exhausting it:
- Qi Gong „Activating the gateway to life“ - especially for the kidneys
- Tai Chi - promotes the flow of Qi and warms from within
- Exercises to strengthen the lower dantian
- „Kidney tapping“ - activates Ming Men and kidney points
- 15-20 minutes a day is enough
🚶 Gentle everyday movement
Movement yes - but not exhaustive:
- Leisurely walks - ideal in the great outdoors
- Easy yoga - no strenuous asanas
- Only swim in warm water - dry off well afterwards
- Cycling at a moderate pace
- Exercise in the morning uses the rising Yang energy
⚠️ Avoid these activities
Exhausting sports deplete the kidney yang:
- No intensive endurance training (marathon, HIIT)
- No training to exhaustion
- No long sessions in the cold or wind
- No swimming in cold water
- Don't abuse sport as a stress reliever - rest is better
Seasonal adjustment
❄️ Winter - The critical season
Winter is one of the kidneys - special protection is needed:
- Maximum heat supply - kidney warmer, warm clothing, hot water bottle
- Early to bed, late to rise - living with the dark
- Warming food: soups, stews, lamb, ginger
- Reduce activity - gather energy inwards
- Boosting moxibustion - ideal for the cold season
🍂 Autumn - preparing for winter
Build up your kidney yang for the winter now:
- Warming herbs and tonics begin
- Keep warm earlier - don't wait for the cold
- Slowly bring bedtime forward
- Introducing a warming diet
- Strengthening the immune system and kidneys together
🌸 Spring - build up carefully
The yang begins to rise - support it:
- Slowly more outdoor exercise
- Keep warm in changeable weather
- Qi Gong outdoors - use the rising energy
- Do not put on light clothing too quickly
- The body needs time to adapt
☀️ Summer - use the heat
The natural warmth supports the kidney yang:
- Enjoy the warmth of the sun on your lower back
- But beware of air conditioning - it cools the kidneys
- No ice-cold drinks - not even in summer
- Maintain warm foot baths
- Good time to replenish yang for the winter
💡 Important to know
Strengthening the kidney yang requires patience and consistency. It is like lighting a fire that has been burning for a long time - it takes time for the flame to become stable again. Ensure constant warmth, sufficient rest and avoid anything that cools you down or exhausts you. Over time, you will feel the fire of your gateway to life burn stronger again.
For optimal treatment progress
TCM is not a quick fix for symptoms., but rather a holistic healing process. You will achieve the best results if you consistently integrate the treatment into your daily routine and give your body time to regenerate.
Integration into everyday life
Start with ONE step
Don't try to change everything at once! That's overwhelming and leads to
usually leads to you giving up. Instead:
- Week 1-2: Avoid cold food and drinks completely
- Week 3-4: Daily heat treatment of the lower back (Ming Men)
- Week 5-6: Qi Gong „Activate the gate of life“ daily 10 min.
- Week 7-8: Integrate warming kidney tonics
- From week 9: Add further methods as required
Realistic expectations
After 2–3 weeks: First improvements noticeable
- Warmer lower back
- Less urination at night
- A little more energy
After 6–8 weeks: Significant improvements
- Significantly warmer feet
- Stronger lower back
- More drive and willpower
After 3–6 months: Sustainable healing
- Kidney yang is noticeably strengthened
- Body can retain heat
- Vitality and libido are back
TCM vs. Western medicine
TCM and Western medicine are not mutually exclusive — they complement each other!
When Western medicine is important:
- In acute emergencies
- In case of structural damage
- In case of infections
- For accurate diagnoses (laboratory, imaging)
Where TCM has its strengths:
- In case of functional disorders
- For chronic complaints
- For prevention
- For holistic healing
Ideal: Combine both systems! Use Western medicine for
Acute treatment and accurate diagnosis, TCM for lasting healing
and strengthening the body's self-healing powers.
Important: Never stop taking prescribed medication without consulting your doctor first!
Talk to your doctor when you start TCM treatment.
Syndrome differentiation according to TCM:
Tongue: Pale, moist, swollen with tooth impressions, thin white coating
Pulse: Deep (Chen Mai 沉脉) and weak (Ruo Mai 弱脉), especially at both Chi positions (Kidney)
Pathomechanism:
Kidney Yang (Shen Yang 肾阳), the root of all Yang in the body, is exhausted. The Ming Men fire (命门火) - the fire of the gate of life - no longer burns sufficiently to warm the body, control the bladder and preserve the essence. Without this warming fire, coldness (Han 寒) dominates in the lower burner, the transformation of fluids is disturbed and vitality dwindles.
Treatment principle:
Wen Bu Shen Yang (温补肾阳) - Warming and tonifying the Kidney Yang
Classic recipe:
You Gui Wan (右归丸) - Pill that restores the right
Important modifications depending on accompanying symptoms:
- In severe cold: + Fu Zi (Aconiti Radix lateralis), increase Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex)
- For edema: + Fu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen)
- For back pain: + Du Zhong (Eucommiä Cortex), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Gu Sui Bu (Drynariä Rhizoma)
- For impotence: + Yin Yang Huo (Epimedii Herba), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Radix), Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu pantotrichum)
Every step counts
Your body WANTS to heal—you just have to create the right conditions for it to do so.
Remember:
👣 Every little step counts
You don't have to be perfect. Even one warm meal a day is better than none. Even 5 minutes of qigong is better than no exercise at all.
⏳ Patience pays off
It took years for your body to get into this state. Give it time to regenerate. Healing takes time, but it WILL happen.
🎯 Focus on what you can DO
Don't concentrate on what you are doing „wrong". Focus on every positive step you take.
💚 Be good to yourself
Perfection does not exist. It is acceptable to have an off day occasionally. Tomorrow is a new day when you can continue.
🤝 You are not alone
Thousands of people are walking this path with you. For over 2,000 years, TCM has been helping people like you who want to regain their health.
